Feature walls ideas to transform every room

Feature walls – also known as accent walls – have come a long way. Previously, they were all about the paint. Then statement wallpaper made a big comeback. Now panels seem to be taking centre stage. Whether your goal is to introduce some dramatic changes to your interiors – or simply refresh an existing room scheme – feature walls fit the bill. They provide a decorative (and functional) focal point for almost any indoor and outdoor space. Hyperion Tiles is renowned for its design-driven portfolio of porcelain, stone and statement tiles and flooring, that embraces both current trends and timeless classics. So, we are thrilled to announce that we are also the exclusive UK supplier for Mikodam. This leading architectural products and furniture brand offers a unique range of striking wall and ceiling panels.

The newDeta line, featuring a striking “dissolving geometry” motif, is one of the latest additions to Mikodam’s extensive acoustic wall and ceiling panel collection

Why create a feature wall?

Feature walls add instant wow factor. They are a fabulous way to highlight a room’s interesting architectural details. In fact, they can accentuate a room’s height, and maximise natural light. However, they also represent a wonderful opportunity to experiment with colour, pattern and texture. Feature walls can be high-impact or subtle, depending on your space, personal taste and budget.

Feature wall dos and don’ts

If creating feature walls is new to you, there are a few guidelines to bear in mind. First and foremost, choose your location carefully. Feature walls should never be random. Identify your room’s existing focal point, and use the feature wall to highlight this. The idea is to draw the eye to one area. So, if your feature wall is “competing” with another focal feature (TV wall or fireplace, for example) this will dilute its impact.

With its striking design and finish, Mikodam’s eye-catching 3D Deta acoustic panel line is the ideal choice for any statement feature wall. You can even mix and match any panels for a more striking pattern

Bold feature walls can be tricky to pull off in very small and/or crowded rooms. Their function is to highlight, so they need room to breathe. Conversely, feature walls can really help to demarcate/define different areas or zones within an open-plan space. But don’t think you automatically have to go big and bold with clashing colours. Complementary shades that harmonise with the rest of the room can be just as effective. Balance is key.

The importance of acoustics

We offer a huge range of wall and ceiling panels for both commercial and residential projects. Their ultra-modern acoustic collection combines function and form, offering a striking choice of aesthetics and a valuable practical role. When used correctly, acoustic wall panels can address a variety of noise and/or soundproofing issues, enhancing peace, privacy and comfort.

Available in a wide variety of colours and materials, including fabric, lacquer and wood, the Deta acoustic collection allows clients to embrace their creativity and personalise their feature wall or ceiling designs

Installing Mikodam panels on feature walls and ceilings facilitates even sound distribution, and prevents acoustical defects such as glare, background noise echo and flutter echo. They are therefore a versatile solution for commercial properties such as offices, restaurants and bars, in addition to residential projects, such as luxury apartments and town houses.

How do acoustic wall panels work?

In simple terms, an acoustic panel absorbs sound to alleviate background noise, and minimise the reverberation and echo within a space. How you should treat a particular space to achieve optimum acoustic quality depends on a range of different factors. These include the size of the space, the number and intensity of the sound sources, the materials used, and how sound travels within the space. The calibrations that take all this into account are called acoustic alterations, and obviously vary significantly from project to project. Depending on the variables, you can treat sound in three key ways: reflection, scattering and absorption.

Passionate about patterns? Feast your eyes on Mikodam'sNeka line, which can be rotated to deliver different décor combinations

Did you know that sound waves reflect more on corners with right angles? Therefore, using sound-absorbing panels on corners will increase the acoustic quality of a space. For residential properties, it’s usually more important to focus on preventing sounds from outside the space in question penetrating inside, and vice-versa. Using isolators achieves this. However, sound that’s absorbed excessively can become dull and unnatural, so in commercial/public places sound scattering is more appropriate, in order to retain a lively ambience.

Mikodam’s Rona line of decorative wall panels is all about dynamism, cleverly creating an illusion of movement to enliven any interior

What sets Mikodam wall panels apart?

Mikodam wall panels look as good as they perform, which is key for any successful feature wall. We offer many different lines of wall panels, so there’s no shortage of choice. And there’s plenty of scope for customisation too, so that your finished feature walls match your individual vision. We always encourage clients to be part of this creative process, transforming the wall panels available into unique designs. Selecting the colours, materials and shapes – and experimenting with different rotations and combinations – offers unrivalled flexibility. And you can use all the panels with each other, to create a truly bespoke finish.

Mikodam’s decorative Sona collection, featuring wooden and lacquer panels, offers timeless linear designs that combine beautifully with other lines

In addition to feature walls, you can use Mikodam panels as headboards, or as overhang claddings. So, they don’t even have to cover entire walls: many clients choose to install them as exclusive, singular wall art pieces instead. Complementing this versatility is their sustainability. Mikodam wall panels combine quality with durability, delivering products that are built to last.

Fitting, however, is fast – despite the complexity of their design. You mount the panels on a rail system, which you can easily change when desired. These rail systems can swivel 90°, 180° and 270°. So this allows you to create your own patterns: horizontal, vertical, or even a combination of both!

For a feature wall that combines colour, texture and pattern, look no further than Mikodam's Zeta collection, which embraces dimensionality to add interest and impact
