Drawing a Horizontal Without a Second Colour

Half the square at 152 x 76mm and finished in the same deep green gloss, this is the Artworks Edwardian Green Half Tile, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

Exactly half a 152mm square and 7mm thick with straight edges, this piece exists so that a scheme can change rhythm without anyone reaching for a cutter. Laid on its own it produces a fine brick bond of about 87 tiles to the square metre. Used a course or two at a time it becomes a border, a banding, a stall riser, or the shallow filler above a bath and below a window where a full tile would otherwise have to be trimmed to fit.

In a deep green, this is the piece that lets you draw horizontals. A single band of half tiles beneath a moulding, or two courses run as a plinth at the foot of a wall, gives the eye a line to settle on without bringing a second colour into the room — a quieter device than a patterned border, and one that suits the half-height Edwardian scheme with its white paintwork above. It is worth knowing why this particular green exists at all: copper has been left out of the glaze recipe entirely, and that is what allows a colour of this depth to be run through a shower, a wet room or the splash zone behind a sink without misgivings. Where a half tile does have to be cut, the exposed edge shows a pale biscuit line against the glaze, so keep cuts to internal corners and to the courses least likely to be looked at.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Edwardian Green tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes — and this is the colour that was made for it. Original Style developed Edwardian Green specifically for wet areas: showers, wet rooms, bathrooms and the wall behind a kitchen sink. It is made with a copper-free glaze recipe, which stands up to constant water better than the copper-based greens do. You still need a properly tanked substrate, a white flexible adhesive and a grout rated for wet areas, but the glaze itself is impervious and needs no sealing.

Can I use these on the floor?

No — Artworks is a wall range only. The ceramic body is not rated for foot traffic and the gloss glaze would scratch and lose its shine quickly underfoot. For a floor to sit beneath an Edwardian Green wall, a Victorian-style geometric floor or an encaustic-effect tile is the historically correct partner, and our team can help you pair one.

Will the colour be consistent across my order?

The Artworks glazes are applied over a pressed ceramic body and slight variation from tile to tile is part of the character rather than a fault — it is what stops a large tiled wall looking printed. Variation between production batches can be a little greater, so order the whole of a room in one go where you can, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Edwardian Green?

Use a white flexible tile adhesive, which keeps the glaze reading true. For grout, aim for the middle: a mid to deep grey, or a soft green-grey close to the tile's own tone. Brilliant white draws a hard bright grid over a colour this saturated and fights it. Charcoal or black goes the other way and weighs the green down until it reads as a far darker colour than it is — precisely the effect Edwardian tiling was moving away from. A grey a shade or two darker than the wall you want lets the green stay green.

Is Edwardian Green in stock, and how quickly can I have it?

The range is usually held in stock and we can normally despatch within a few working days; mouldings and trims occasionally run on a longer lead time, so it is worth a call on 01344 620211 before you plan the fitting week. UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000, and we can hold a delivery back until your site is ready.

How does Edwardian Green compare with the other greens in the Artworks range?

Edwardian Green is the wet-area sibling of Victorian Green. Original Style describe it as offering most of the grandeur of Victorian Green while using a copper-free glaze recipe, which makes it the more hardwearing of the two in a shower or wet room. The trade-off is slightly less of the depth and natural variation that copper-based glazes give, so it reads a shade more subdued and a little more even across a wall. The other three greens are different colours rather than different depths: Pavilion Green is a brighter, more saturated mid green, Palm Green leans warm and leafy, and Jade Breeze is the palest, with a cool blue-grey cast. Cut samples are the only reliable way to choose between them, and we are happy to send several.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Edwardian Green?

We stock seventeen: the 152mm field tile and its half tile, a 228 x 75mm large brick, bevelled metro tiles in 150 x 75mm and 75 x 75mm, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Original Style also make the Artworks external corner trim to order in Edwardian Green, so if a scheme needs a wrapped outside corner rather than a mitre, call us on 01344 620211 — made-to-order pieces can carry a minimum order quantity and a longer lead time. Tell us the room and we will work out what you need.

What is the half tile for?

It is a 152 x 76mm brick — the field tile halved along its length. Laid in a running bond it gives a finer, busier wall than the square tile, closer to the proportions of a traditional metro. It is also the piece that lets you turn a corner or meet a moulding without cutting a full tile in two. About 87 cover a square metre, and a box of 44 covers 0.511m², the same area as a box of field tiles.

Will a green this deep make a small room feel dark?

Less than you might expect. Edwardian Green is a deep colour but not a dark neutral — the gloss glaze returns light rather than swallowing it, and the green stays legible as a colour even in a north-facing room. Floor to ceiling in a windowless cloakroom it will certainly read as enclosing, which is often the point. If you want the depth without the weight, do what Edwardian builders did: run it to dado or three-quarter height, close it with a moulding, and keep everything above it white or a warm off-white.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: White flexible adhesive is the right bedding. Grout wants to sit between the extremes — mid to deep grey, or a green-grey a shade or two off the tile. Choose brilliant white and every joint turns into a bright rule drawn over the green; choose charcoal or black and the run sinks towards a heaviness this colour does not have and was never meant to have. Deep gloss picks up haze quickly, so wipe the face down before residue dries.
  • Layout: Where half tiles meet field tiles, set both out from the same vertical lines so the joints align at the change of course. Two courses of half tiles equal one course of the 152mm square, which makes banding straightforward to plan.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
