Product story

Twice The Courses, Half The Height

Halve the field square and you have a 152 x 76mm brick that courses twice as often up a wall: the Artworks Ascot Blue Half Tile, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

Built on the same 7mm body and the same straight edge as its larger relation, cut to a two-to-one rectangle. A 152 x 76mm tile covers 0.011552m², so a square metre of wall takes about 87 of them. Boxes are supplied as 44 tiles covering 0.511m². Two boxes will take a square metre with a little to spare.

Laid in a half bond it gives a wall a finer, busier texture; stacked upright it reads as a narrow vertical panel; used as a single course beneath a moulding it makes a tidy border. Every extra joint is one more line for the glaze to break against, and on a colour that sits between blue and grey that matters — a densely coursed wall shows the shift in small increments, tile by tile, rather than as one broad sweep. Metals go with it either way: brushed nickel, unpolished chrome, zinc or pewter echo its habit of not quite committing, and brass warms it — both are honest choices, and neither is the more obvious one.

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ascot Blue tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. The glaze is impervious and unaffected by constant water, so these tiles are entirely at home in a shower enclosure, above a bath, behind a sink or across a wet-room wall. What matters is what sits behind and between them: a properly tanked substrate, a white flexible adhesive and a grout rated for wet areas. The tiles themselves never need sealing.

Can I use these on the floor?

No — Artworks is a wall range only. The ceramic body is not rated for foot traffic and the gloss glaze would scratch and lose its shine quickly underfoot. For a floor to sit beneath an Ascot Blue wall, a black and white geometric or an encaustic-effect tile is the natural partner, and our team can help you pair one.

Will the colour be consistent across my order?

The Artworks glazes are applied over a pressed ceramic body, and slight variation from tile to tile is part of the character rather than a fault — it is what stops a large tiled wall looking printed. Ascot Blue shows it a little more than most, because the balance of blue and grey shifts across the surface as well as with the light. Order the whole of a room in one go where you can, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Ascot Blue?

Use a white flexible adhesive. Grout is unusually consequential on this colour, because it decides which way the tile reads. Ascot Blue sits between blue and grey, and the joint tips the balance: a cooler, faintly blue-toned grey brings the blue forward, while a warm grey or greige lets the grey side dominate. If you want it to keep both readings and stay ambiguous, match the grout closely in tone and let the wall shift on its own. The one to think hard about is brilliant white — on a colour this quiet it becomes the loudest thing on the wall, and the tile loses what little contrast it has. Grout haze shows readily on gloss, so sponge each section as you go.

Is Ascot Blue in stock, and how quickly can I have it?

The range is usually held in stock and we can normally despatch within a few working days; mouldings and trims occasionally run on a longer lead time, so it is worth a call on 01344 620211 before you plan the fitting week. UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000, and we can hold a delivery back until your site is ready.

How does Ascot Blue compare with the other blues in the Artworks range?

Ascot Blue is the quiet one, and the only one that will not settle on a single reading. Original Style describe it as a blueish-grey or a greyish-blue depending on the light it is seen in — classic and understated. The other three commit: one is a warmer blue with a green cast, one a versatile mid-blue, and one a deep indigo that behaves like a dark colour. If you want a blue that behaves like a soft neutral and changes through the day, this is the one. Order cut samples of two or three and live with them on the wall for a day before choosing.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Why does Ascot Blue look different at different times of day?

Because that is what the colour is. It sits on the line between blue and grey, so whatever light is in the room decides which side comes forward. Cool north light and an overcast morning pull it towards grey; warm afternoon and evening light, or a warm bulb, bring the blue out. It is the most useful thing to know about this tile, and the reason a single glance at a sample is not enough. Tape a sample to the wall and look at it at the times you actually use the room — first thing, mid-afternoon, and after dark with the lights on. If you want to steer it one way, the grout does most of that work.

What is the half tile for?

It is a 152 x 76mm brick — the field tile halved along its length. Laid on its own in a running bond it gives a finer, busier wall than the square tile. Used a course or two at a time it becomes a border, a banding or a stall riser, or the shallow filler above a bath where a full tile would have to be cut down. A 152 x 76mm tile covers 0.011552m², so a square metre takes about 87; boxes hold 44 and cover 0.511m² as supplied.

Which pieces are available in Ascot Blue?

Eighteen — the full Artworks set. The 152mm field tile and its half tile, a 228 x 75mm large brick, bevelled metro tiles in 150 x 75mm and 75 x 75mm, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner, and ten mouldings: Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and the Omega dado. Original Style also make rectangles, round-edge tiles, internal corners and corner wrapping pieces to order in this colour — those carry minimum quantities and longer lead times, so call us on 01344 620211 if a scheme needs one.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Bed on white flexible adhesive. With twice as many joints as a full square, the grout choice carries extra weight here: a cool grey with a faint blue cast keeps the blue reading uppermost, a greige lets the grey come through, and a tone-on-tone match lets the courses read as one continuous surface. Brilliant white is best left alone; it outshines the glaze and leaves the tile with very little contrast of its own. Sponge the residue away before it sets — dried film clings hard to gloss.
  • Layout: Decide the bond before the first course goes up: a half bond, a third bond, a stack and a vertical stack all read very differently at this size. Keep full tiles at internal angles and along the top course, and take the cuts down to the base where they are least noticed.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
