Pebble mosaic is one of the few tiles chosen for how it feels rather than how it looks. The uneven surface breaks up standing water and gives the foot something to hold, which is why it has become the default for shower trays and wet-room bases in spa-style bathrooms.

We stock both forms: natural river-washed pebbles with their full rounded profile, and flat-cut pebbles sliced to give a level surface with the same outline.

Rounded or flat-cut

Rounded pebbles give the strongest underfoot sensation and the most drainage, but they are harder to clean and uncomfortable for some people to stand on for long. Flat-cut pebbles keep the pattern and most of the grip while giving a level surface — the better choice for a whole wet-room floor, or for anyone who dislikes the feel of the round profile.

They need a lot of grout

Pebble mosaic uses considerably more grout than any other tile, and the grouting is slow because the joints are deep and irregular. Budget for both. A sanded grout in a tone close to the darkest pebbles usually looks best and hides the least even joints.

Seal it, and seal it again

These are natural stone, so they are porous. Seal before grouting to stop the grout staining the pebbles, and again after. In a shower, expect to re-seal periodically — how often depends on your water, but an annual check is sensible.

Falls and drainage

A pebble floor will not correct a badly formed fall; it only makes standing water less obvious, which is worse. The fall to the waste needs to be right in the screed before any mosaic goes down.
