Tile Buying Questions, Answered

Honest answers from the Hyperion team — the questions we hear every day in the Ascot showroom.

How do I choose the right tile material for my project?

Start with the demands of the space, then choose the look. For floors, wet rooms and high-traffic areas, porcelain is the workhorse: dense, water-resistant and almost maintenance-free. Natural stone — limestone, marble, travertine — brings unrepeatable character but needs sealing and gentler cleaning. Ceramic and hand-glazed zellige are perfect for walls and splashbacks, while mosaics add texture to niches and feature areas. If in doubt, order free cut samples of your shortlist and live with them in the room for a few days.

What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic tiles?

Both are fired clay, but porcelain is pressed harder and fired hotter, making it denser and far less porous — it absorbs under 0.5% water. That makes porcelain the better choice for floors, bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor areas. Ceramic is lighter, easier to cut and usually more affordable, which makes it ideal for wall tiling and splashbacks. As a rule: ceramic for walls, porcelain for everywhere life actually happens.

What size tile works best in a small bathroom?

Counterintuitively, larger tiles often make small bathrooms feel bigger — fewer grout lines mean fewer visual interruptions, so a 60 x 60 cm or 60 x 120 cm format reads as one calm surface. Pair a large-format floor with lighter wall tones to open the space further. Small formats still earn their place: metro tiles and mosaics add texture and work beautifully in showers and niches where large tiles would need heavy cutting.

How do I order free tile samples?

Every tile we sell is available as a free cut sample. Simply open the product page of any tile you like, add the sample to your basket and we will deliver it free of charge. Samples are cut from real stock, so the colour, texture and finish are exactly what your full order will look like. We recommend ordering three or four contenders and checking them in your own light, morning and evening, before you commit. Browse all tiles to get started.

How does delivery work for tile orders?

Cut samples are delivered free across the UK. Full tile orders are carefully packed — larger orders travel on protective pallets to keep every tile safe in transit. Delivery timescales vary by brand and stock level and are shown on each product page and at checkout; our team will confirm the date once your order is placed. If your project has a deadline, contact us before ordering and we will check lead times for you.

Can I visit the Hyperion Tiles showroom in Ascot?
