Patio Tiles and Garden Tiles, Built for the British Climate

Searching for patio tiles or garden tiles? Our 20mm outdoor porcelain paving is the most popular choice for patios - frost-proof, slip-rated and low-maintenance - while natural stone flagstones and cobbles bring timeless character to garden paths, courtyards and terraces. Both are compatible with under-tile heating and with traditional or raised pedestal installation systems. If you like the warmth and pattern of Mediterranean-style tiling, our range includes mosaic and patterned options built for exterior use rather than indoor-only designs adapted for outdoors.

From Patios to Pool Surrounds

Garden tiles have changed how outdoor space gets designed. Frost-proof, fade-resistant and far easier to keep clean than traditional paving, they bring interior-level design to patios, paths, terraces, courtyards, rooftop spaces and pool surrounds, and make the seamless indoor-outdoor look genuinely achievable. Many ranges pair with matching interior formats from our floor tiles collection, so one design can run from the kitchen through bifold doors onto the terrace, alongside characterful flagstone and quarry options for period gardens.

Expert guidance

Outdoor tile questions, answered

Guidance on exterior suitability, finishes and planning your outdoor space.

What are outdoor tiles and how are they different from indoor tiles?

Outdoor tiles are manufactured to withstand the elements, so they're more durable and weather-resistant than standard indoor tiles. Our outdoor collections are built from porcelain, natural stone and concrete-effect ceramics designed to handle rain, frost, heat and fluctuating temperatures, usually with a textured or anti-slip finish for safer footing when wet. They're also more resistant to staining, moss and UV fading, and denser, so they absorb far less moisture and are less likely to crack in cold weather. If you want an indoor look that continues outside, our floor tiles collection has matching interior formats for several ranges.

Can outdoor tiles be used in all weather conditions?

Yes. Our outdoor tiles are designed for year-round UK weather, from summer heat to driving rain and freezing temperatures. Porcelain options are extremely low in water absorption, which is what gives them their frost resistance and prevents cracking in winter, and many ranges have UV-stable finishes so colours don't fade in direct sun. For areas with heavy foot traffic or standing water, choose a tile with an anti-slip finish - check our outdoor wall tiles range if you need matching wall and floor formats.

Are outdoor tiles slippery when wet?

Safety is a key priority when selecting outdoor tiles, especially in spaces like patios, paths or around pools where surfaces are often wet. At Hyperion Tiles, many of our outdoor tiles come with a high slip resistance rating, often denoted as R11 or higher, which makes them safer to walk on when wet. These tiles feature a textured surface that adds grip underfoot without compromising on style. While no outdoor surface can be completely slip-proof, choosing tiles designed with anti-slip technology significantly reduces the risk of accidents. It’s also important to consider proper drainage in your installation to help prevent water from pooling. We’re happy to advise on which tiles in our range offer the best performance in terms of safety and suitability for your intended outdoor use. With the right tiles and correct installation, you can create an outdoor space that is as practical and secure as it is attractive.

What types of tiles are best for outdoor use?

The best outdoor tiles are weatherproof, frost-resistant, low in water absorption and textured for grip. We generally recommend porcelain for its strength and low maintenance, or natural stone such as slate and limestone from our natural stone paving range for a timeless look, sealed and cared for correctly. Terracotta-style tiles bring a warm Mediterranean feel but need sealing for UK winters, and concrete-effect tiles suit a more modern, minimalist space. Match the tile to the demands of your specific area, whether that's a patio or a flight of steps

How do I clean and maintain outdoor tiles?

Cleaning outdoor tiles is a simple but important part of keeping your outdoor space looking fresh and performing well over time. At Hyperion Tiles, we recommend regular sweeping to remove dirt, leaves and debris that can build up and cause staining or moss growth. For a more thorough clean, use warm water with a pH-neutral detergent and a stiff-bristled brush or outdoor mop. Avoid harsh acids or bleach, especially on natural stone tiles, as these can damage the surface. Jet washing can be effective but should be done with care to avoid dislodging grout or damaging tile edges. In areas prone to moss or algae, you may consider using a treatment specifically formulated for outdoor tiles. Porcelain tiles are generally very low-maintenance and will resist most staining. For natural stone options, applying a sealant will help protect against moisture and dirt. With routine cleaning and the right products, your outdoor tiles will stay looking great year after year.

Can I install outdoor tiles myself or should I use a professional?

Some confident DIYers manage smaller areas, such as a raised patio or balcony, but we usually recommend a professional tiler or landscaper for outdoor installations. They require proper ground preparation, levelling, drainage planning and adhesives and grout rated for UK weather. Mistakes early on, such as inadequate sub-base compaction or the wrong adhesive, can cause cracking, movement or water damage later. We're happy to advise on products and specification whichever route you take - visit our Ascot showroom to see finishes in person.
