Product story

A Narrower Course, the Same Indigo

Half the width of the field square and every bit as deep in colour, at 152 x 76mm in gloss ceramic, this is the Artworks Royal Blue Half Tile, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

A half tile is the field square divided along its length, and that single change does a great deal of work. Laid in a running bond it gives a wall a finer, quicker rhythm; stacked in columns it reads as vertical panelling; used as one course above a skirting or beneath a cornice it becomes a border with no ornament in it at all. The body is 7mm and the glaze is identical to the square, so the two formats can be mixed within a scheme without any change of plane.

The colour is a deep indigo — the shade cloth reaches after its last dip in the dyer's vat, saturated and slightly changeable as the light moves. Because this format puts more joint into every square metre, the wall reads as texture as much as colour, which takes some of the weight out of a dark glaze. Running it to half height, capping it with a moulding and leaving pale plaster above is the historically correct way to use a colour like this, and it remains a comfortable answer in any room that has to stay light.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Royal Blue tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. The glaze is impervious and unaffected by constant water, so these tiles are entirely at home in a shower enclosure, above a bath, behind a sink or across a wet-room wall. What matters is what sits behind and between them: a properly tanked substrate, a white flexible adhesive and a grout rated for wet areas. The tiles themselves never need sealing.

Can I use these on the floor?

No — Artworks is a wall range only. The ceramic body is not rated for foot traffic and the gloss glaze would scratch and lose its shine quickly underfoot. For a floor to sit beneath a Royal Blue wall, a black and white geometric or an encaustic-effect tile is the natural partner, and our team can help you pair one.

Will the colour be consistent across my order?

The Artworks glazes are applied over a pressed ceramic body, and slight variation from tile to tile is part of the character rather than a fault — it is what stops a large tiled wall looking printed. On a colour this deep the variation reads as movement in the glaze rather than as patchiness. Order the whole of a room in one go where you can, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Royal Blue?

Use a white flexible adhesive. For grout, go dark and close in tone: a deep grey, a charcoal, or a blue-grey pitched near the tile's own depth. Against an indigo this deep, brilliant white draws a bright net across the wall and the tile ends up disappearing behind its own joints. A mid grey is the other one to avoid — too light to belong to the colour and too dark to read as a deliberate contrast, so it simply looks tired. Grout haze shows more readily on a deep gloss glaze than on a pale one, so sponge each section down as you go rather than leaving it.

Is Royal Blue in stock, and how quickly can I have it?

The range is usually held in stock and we can normally despatch within a few working days; mouldings and trims occasionally run on a longer lead time, so it is worth a call on 01344 620211 before you plan the fitting week. UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000, and we can hold a delivery back until your site is ready.

How does Royal Blue compare with the other blues in the Artworks range?

Royal Blue is the deep one. Original Style describe it as a deep indigo with an air of nobility, and it is the only blue in the range that behaves like a dark colour rather than a coloured one — it absorbs light where the others return it. The alternatives are all lighter and all pull in different directions: one is a warmer blue with a green cast, one a versatile mid-blue, and one a blue-grey that shifts with the light and reads almost as a neutral. If you are weighing Royal Blue against any of them, order cut samples of both and look at them on the actual wall at the time of day you use the room — a colour this deep changes more between rooms than a mid-tone does.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Royal Blue?

Eighteen — the fullest set of any of the blues. The 152mm field tile and its half tile, a 228 x 75mm large brick, bevelled metro tiles in 150 x 75mm and 75 x 75mm, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings: Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Original Style also make rectangles, round-edge tiles, internal corners and corner wrapping pieces to order in this colour — those carry minimum quantities and longer lead times, so call us on 01344 620211 if a scheme needs one.

What is the half tile for?

It is a 152 x 76mm brick — the field tile halved along its length. Laid on its own in a running bond it gives a finer, busier wall than the square tile. Used a course or two at a time it becomes a border, a banding or a stall riser, or the shallow filler above a bath where a full tile would have to be cut down. A 152 x 76mm tile covers 0.011552m², so a square metre takes about 87; boxes hold 44 and cover 0.511m² as supplied.

Will a colour this deep make a small room feel dark?

Yes, to a degree — and that is usually the point rather than the problem. A glaze this deep absorbs light instead of returning it, so a room tiled floor to ceiling reads smaller, darker and more enclosing. In a cloakroom, a snug or a jewel-box bathroom that is exactly the effect you want. In a north-facing room you are hoping to brighten, it is the wrong choice. The middle path is the one Victorian and Edwardian builders used: run it to dado or three-quarter height, close it with a moulding, and keep everything above it pale. A cut sample seen on the actual wall, in the light you actually use, is worth more here than anywhere else in the range.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Bed the tiles on white flexible adhesive and keep the joints dark — a deep grey or a blue-grey chosen to sit a shade or two off the glaze at most. Brilliant white does this format no favours: a half-tile bond carries far more joint per square metre, and in white every one of them announces itself while the bond pattern is lost. Mid grey fails the other way round, reading as neither one thing nor the other. On a gloss this deep, haze lingers; work it off with a clean damp sponge and a dry cloth while the grout is still fresh.
  • Layout: Decide the height of the run before setting out — a band that lands mid-window or clips a light switch is hard to forgive later. For a running bond, offset each course by half the tile's length, 76mm, and check the horizontal with a level every third course. For a stacked layout, plumb the first column carefully and work outwards from it in both directions.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
