Two To One, Which Is Why Herringbone Works

A 152 x 76mm rectangle in warm grey gloss, exactly twice as long as it is wide: the Artworks London Stone Half Tile, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

That ratio is the whole point of the piece. A herringbone interlocks without cutting only when the rectangle is a true 2:1, and at 152 x 76mm this one is: the short end of every tile lands flush against the long side of its neighbour, course after course up the wall. Our own suggestion for this colour is a herringbone taken right across a wall, and here is the shape that allows it. Each tile is 7mm thick and covers 0.011552m², which puts 86.6 of them in a square metre. Boxes are packed with 44 and stated by Original Style at 0.511m², at 6.16kg.

Herringbone is a busy geometry and it asks for a colour that will not compete with it. London Stone is a warm grey rather than a cool one, and the vintage charm Original Style describe belongs to traditional rooms; run on the diagonal, a settled tone of that kind turns the pattern into texture rather than decoration. Laid flat instead — stacked, or in a running bond — the same rectangle gives a lower half with a finer horizontal rhythm to it, which sits well beneath a paler shade taken to dado height in an older room.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

How many London Stone Half Tiles are in a box, and how many do I need per square metre?

There are 44 half tiles in a box.

Keep the next two figures separate in your head. A box covers 0.511m². This is the supplier's stated coverage and it includes an allowance for grout.

The per-square-metre rate comes from the dimensions of the tile itself. At 152 x 76mm, a square metre is made up of 86.6 half tiles.

Order against the box coverage for your measured area and add a margin for cuts, taking a more generous margin if the tiles are going up in a herringbone or a brick bond.

Can London Stone be laid in a herringbone?

Yes, and the Half Tile is the piece that makes it possible. At 152 x 76mm it is exactly twice as long as it is wide, and a 2:1 rectangle is the only proportion that interlocks in a true herringbone without cutting. Every tile meets its neighbour squarely, and the pattern closes on itself all the way across the wall.

The cutting comes at the ends of the run instead. Wherever the herringbone meets a border, a cap or a corner, the tiles have to be cut on the diagonal to close the edge, so allow extra over your measured area for those cuts — nearer 15 per cent than 10. Set the centre line out on the wall first and work outwards from it.

As with everything in Artworks, this is a layout for an internal wall.

Can London Stone be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. Artworks London Stone is rated for internal walls, wet and dry, so it is at home in a shower enclosure, on wet room walls, behind a bath and across a splashback. The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing, and routine cleaning is nothing more than warm water and a mild detergent.

The care in a wet area goes into what sits behind the tile. The background should be flat, sound and properly tanked before fixing, and the joints kept in good order afterwards. What London Stone is not rated for is a floor: it is a wall glaze throughout the range.

Can I use London Stone on a floor?

No. Artworks is a wall range, and a gloss wall glaze is not rated for foot traffic. Walked on it will scuff and dull, and it is not intended to be laid underfoot. Every piece made in London Stone, from the field tile to the smallest moulding, is for internal walls.

That need not limit the scheme. Tell us the room and we will suggest a floor tile that sits well beneath a London Stone wall. Call the team on 01344 620211, or come to the showroom at 67 High Street, Ascot, and we will put the two side by side for you.

Will the colour vary between boxes of London Stone?

There is a little variation between production batches, as there is with any glazed ceramic. It is slight, but two batches fixed on the same wall can read differently once the light falls across them. The safest course is to order the whole job in one go, and to ask us to quote the batch when we confirm it.

It is also worth keeping a spare box from that batch once the tiling is finished. If a tile is ever damaged, a replacement from the same batch will disappear into the wall, where one ordered several years later may not.

Which adhesive and grout colour should I use with London Stone?

Fix with a white flexible adhesive. The grout is the decision that matters most on this colour: choose a warm grey, a greige or a soft putty, close to the tile in tone. Keeping the warmth in the joint is what preserves the aged, settled reading the colour is bought for.

Two choices to avoid. Brilliant white makes a colour whose whole appeal is that it looks long established suddenly look brand new, and it turns the wall into a bright grid. A cool or blue-toned grey does the opposite damage: it drains the warmth away and leaves the tile reading as merely grey, with the character taken out of it.

Is London Stone in stock, and how is it delivered?

London Stone is usually in stock across all fifteen shapes we hold. Send us your quantities and we will confirm availability and a delivery date before anything is committed, so the tiling can be booked into the programme with confidence.

Delivery is free on UK orders over £1,000. You are also very welcome at our family-run showroom at 67 High Street, Ascot, where the Original Style range can be seen in person, or you can speak to the team on 01344 620211.

How does London Stone compare with the other Artworks greys?

London Stone is the warm one. Original Style describe it as warmer than the other greys they make, and tie its vintage charm to traditional schemes taken to dado height. That warmth is its defining property, and it is why the colour reads as a surface that has been in the building a while rather than one laid last week.

Artworks runs to six greys and neutrals in all: Chancel Grey, Westminster Grey, London Stone, Charcoal Grey, Jet Black and Platinum. Of those, Westminster Grey is the neutral one and London Stone is the warm one. That is the useful distinction to hold on to when you are narrowing the choice.

Being honest about it, greys are very hard to tell apart on a screen, where photography and monitor calibration do most of the talking. Order samples of the two or three you are weighing up and look at them on the wall in question, in daylight and under the lamps you actually use. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or posted to you for the cost of postage.

Which pieces are available in London Stone?

Fifteen shapes are stocked in London Stone: the Field Tile, the Half Tile, the Skirting Tile, the Plain Cornice and the External Corner Trim, together with ten mouldings — Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Rope, Scroll, Hogarth, Albert, Astragal, Sigma and Omega. All fifteen are held here, so a whole scheme can be drawn from one shelf.

Original Style additionally make a further group of pieces in this colour to order, subject to a minimum quantity and a manufacturing lead time: the Rectangle 152 x 25mm, the Round Edge Long and the Round Edge Short, the corner wrapping pieces, the Internal Corner, and the handed corner mouldings for the Omega, Astragal, Albert, Victoria and Skirting.

They are not on our shelves, but they can certainly be had. Tell us early in the design which of them your setting-out needs and we will price them, confirm the minimum and put a realistic date against them. Call the team on 01344 620211.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: White flexible adhesive. A herringbone in half tiles puts a great deal of joint into every square metre, all of it running on the diagonal, so the grout ends up doing much of the drawing: keep it warm and within a shade of the tile — warm grey, greige or putty will all do the job. Brilliant white turns the diagonal into a hard white lattice and makes an aged colour look as though it was laid this morning. Cool and blue-toned greys do the opposite damage, pulling the warmth away until nothing but plain grey remains. Sponge the surplus from the gloss before it begins to go off.
  • Layout: For a true herringbone, snap a 45-degree line up the centre of the wall and work outwards from it, so the pattern is centred and the cut pieces finish in the corners. Dry-lay the first metre to confirm the interlock before adhesive goes down. A stacked or offset scheme starts instead from a whole tile on the principal sightline. Outside angles take the 152 x 30mm External Corner Trim, a stocked shape here. The Internal Corner and the rounded edge pieces are not stocked in London Stone; Original Style will make them in this colour to order, subject to a minimum quantity and a lead time, so please call us early.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous, so no sealant is called for. A mild detergent in warm water handles everyday cleaning. Anything abrasive, and any acidic limescale remover, should be kept clear of the surface, since repeated use takes the life out of the shine.
