Choosing bathroom tiles for your whole room

Start with the surfaces you need to cover: the main floor, shower walls, bath surround and any smaller features. They can share a colour palette without using the same tile. Compare bathroom floor tiles and bathroom wall tiles separately so that the finish suits its intended use.

Compare porcelain, ceramic and natural stone

Porcelain offers a wide choice of plain, patterned and stone-effect finishes. Decorative ceramic gives walls a different range of glazes and surface detail. Natural stone brings individual veining and colour variation, with sealing and cleaning requirements that depend on the stone and finish. Check the specification of the exact tile before choosing it for a floor or wet area.

Plan showers and wet-room floors

A wall tile is not automatically suitable underfoot. For a shower floor, ask your installer to confirm the tile's suitability for wet, barefoot use and the layout around the drain. Small chips, additional grout lines or a matt appearance do not by themselves guarantee slip resistance. Tiles and grout also need a correctly specified waterproofing system behind them.

Use bathroom mosaics for a niche, vanity feature or an appropriately specified floor. Compare the wider mosaic tile collection when choosing materials and shapes.

Choose pattern, colour and scale together

View samples beside your vanity finish, brassware and paint in daylight and under the lighting you plan to use. A larger format can create fewer visible joints, but the layout still needs to accommodate corners, niches and fittings. On a small feature wall, check that enough of a decorative repeat remains visible.

Measure each tiled surface separately, agree a cutting allowance with your installer and check the coverage of each pack. For heated floors, confirm compatibility of the complete installation and follow the heating system's commissioning instructions. What are the best tiles to use in a bathroom?

Porcelain and glazed ceramic tiles are generally considered the best all-round choice for bathrooms, thanks to their low water absorption, durability and ease of cleaning. Porcelain is especially well suited to shower areas and floors, where moisture resistance is paramount. Natural stone and marble create a beautifully luxurious finish and can absolutely be used in bathrooms, provided they are properly sealed and maintained. Glass and mosaic tiles are excellent for feature walls, shower niches and adding grip in wet areas. Ultimately, the best tile depends on where it will be used within the room, the look you want to achieve and the level of maintenance you are happy with. Can I use the same tiles on bathroom walls and floors?

Coordinating wall and floor tiles is a popular way to create a calm, cohesive and visually larger bathroom. Most floor-rated tiles can be used on walls as well, allowing you to run a single design throughout for a seamless effect. However, wall tiles must not be used on floors, as they are thinner and not built to withstand foot traffic. It is also important to consider slip resistance on the floor: polished tiles that look stunning on a wall may be too slippery underfoot when wet. We always recommend choosing a floor tile with a suitable anti-slip rating for bathroom floors and wet rooms. Our product information makes suitability clear, and our team is happy to advise.

Are large tiles a good idea in a small bathroom?

Yes. Contrary to common belief, larger tiles can work very well in a small bathroom. Fewer grout lines create a more seamless, uncluttered surface, which tricks the eye into perceiving the space as larger and makes the room easier to clean. Large-format porcelain on both walls and floors can produce a calm, contemporary and luxurious feel. That said, very large tiles require flat, well-prepared surfaces and careful planning around fixtures, so a good tiler and the right adhesive are essential. Mosaics and smaller tiles still have their place for shower floors and feature details. We are happy to help you plan a layout that maximises the sense of space in a compact bathroom.

How do I stop bathroom tiles from getting mouldy?

Mould and mildew in bathrooms typically form on grout and sealant rather than the tiles themselves, and they thrive in poorly ventilated, persistently damp conditions. The most effective prevention is good ventilation: use an extractor fan and open windows to allow moisture to escape after bathing. Wiping down surfaces after use, using a quality mould-resistant grout and sealant, and sealing any natural stone all help significantly. Choosing low-porosity porcelain or ceramic tiles also makes surfaces easier to keep clean. For ongoing care, a regular wipe with a pH-neutral cleaner is usually all that is needed. Do I need special tiles for a shower or wet room?

For showers and wet rooms, you should choose tiles with very low water absorption and, on the floor, an appropriate anti-slip rating. Porcelain is the ideal choice for these areas because it is extremely dense and water-resistant, while mosaics are popular on shower floors as their additional grout lines provide extra grip. Just as important as the tiles is the preparation behind them: a wet room or shower enclosure must be correctly waterproofed, or tanked, before tiling to prevent water ingress.
