A Cornice Without Ornament

At 152 x 75mm, a swept ceramic cornice under a gloss glaze of warm, green-leaning blue — the Artworks Baroque Blue Plain Cornice, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

A cornice can carry the top of a wall on profile alone, and this one is drawn to do exactly that. It is a simple swept section, 75mm deep, finishing the tiling with a proper architectural edge. Its character lives entirely in the curve and in what a gloss glaze does across it. Pieces measure 152mm long, so 6.6 of them make up a linear metre. Boxes hold four and cover 0.6 linear metres.

Because the face is unbroken, the glaze carries one continuous highlight along the whole length of the run — a single line of reflected light that follows the wall around the room without a break. That travelling line is what the profile is for, and it is reason enough in itself to specify it. Set above a half-height wall it gives the tiling a definite top edge instead of a raw last course, and the warmth in the blue stops that edge looking severe. A gilt mirror frame or an antique brass light beneath it will read as part of the same idea. Should the wall beneath include an outside corner, that return is best resolved with the matching external corner trim, leaving the cornice to sit above finished tiling instead of a sawn edge.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Baroque Blue tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. The glaze is impervious and unaffected by constant water, so these tiles are entirely at home in a shower enclosure, above a bath, behind a sink or across a wet-room wall. What matters is what sits behind and between them: a properly tanked substrate, a white flexible adhesive and a grout rated for wet areas. The tiles themselves never need sealing.

Can I use these on the floor?

No — Artworks is a wall range only. The ceramic body is not rated for foot traffic and the gloss glaze would scratch and lose its shine quickly underfoot. If you want a floor to sit beneath a Baroque Blue wall, a geometric or encaustic-effect floor tile is the natural partner, and our team can help you pair one.

Will the colour be consistent across my order?

The Artworks glazes are applied over a pressed ceramic body, and slight variation from tile to tile is part of the character rather than a fault — it is what keeps a large tiled wall from looking printed. Baroque Blue shows this more than most, because the green cast in it shifts a little with the light. Order the whole of a room in one go where you can, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Baroque Blue?

Use a white flexible tile adhesive. For grout, the rule here follows from the colour: Baroque Blue is a warm blue, so choose a grout with warmth in it — a warm grey, a greige or a soft putty tone. Avoid a cool or blue-toned grey, which cancels the warmth and pulls the whole wall towards a colder, flatter blue than the tile actually is. Brilliant white is the other one to avoid: against a mid-toned glaze it draws a bright lattice across the wall and competes with the colour. Grout haze shows readily on a gloss glaze, so sponge each section as you go.

Is Baroque Blue in stock, and how quickly can I have it?

The range is usually held in stock and we can normally despatch within a few working days; mouldings and trims occasionally run on a longer lead time, so it is worth a call on 01344 620211 before you plan the fitting week. UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000, and we can hold a delivery back until your site is ready.

How does Baroque Blue compare with the other blues in the Artworks range?

Baroque Blue is the one that leans green. Original Style describe it as a slightly greener blue with a warm luminosity that sets it apart from the other blues in the range — which is why it sits so comfortably with gold, brass and copper, where a colder blue would fight them. The others are genuinely different colours: one is a versatile mid-blue, one a deep indigo, and one a blue-grey that shifts with the light. If you are choosing between them, order a cut sample of each and look at them in the actual room — blues are the hardest family in the range to judge from a screen.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Baroque Blue?

Fifteen: the 152mm field tile and its half tile, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Baroque Blue is not made as a large brick or as a bevelled metro tile, so if a scheme needs one of those formats it will have to come from a different colour. Original Style also make rectangles, round-edge tiles, internal corners and corner mouldings to order in this colour — those carry minimum quantities and longer lead times, so call us on 01344 620211 if you need one.

How do I finish the top of a half-height tiled wall?

With a moulding laid horizontally along the top course. The choice is a matter of weight: the Victoria and Plain Cornice at 75mm give a substantial architectural capping, the Egg & Dart and Dentil carry relief ornament, the Albert, Hogarth and Rope sit in the middle, and the Astragal, Sigma, Scroll and Omega are slim beads for a quieter line. All are supplied four to a box covering 0.6 linear metres. Measure the run, add 10%, and round up to whole boxes.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Use white flexible adhesive. Grout should carry warmth — soft putty, greige, or a grey with a little brown behind it. A cool or blue-toned grey sets a chilly note in every joint, and the finished length settles into a flatter, greyer blue than the piece in your hand; brilliant white does a different kind of harm at this height, because a cornice is meant to close the wall quietly and a joint that bright leaves the top of the run looking unresolved rather than finished. Since the glaze is gloss, lift haze away while the residue is still damp.
  • Layout: Fix the cornice after the field tiling has set, and hold a dry run of three or four pieces against the wall before anything is bedded so the line can be judged by eye. Plan the run so that joints do not land in the middle of a doorhead, and set the height so the profile reads level with the tops of the architraves in the room.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
