One Unbroken Line Along The Top

A single travelling line of gloss to finish the top of a tiled run, 152 x 75mm deep and entirely undecorated: the Artworks Windsor Blue Plain Cornice, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

The plain cornice is a capping profile: a gently curved section that projects from the wall, takes the light along its length and gives a run of tiling a defined upper edge. Because the face carries no ornament, what it produces is one continuous highlight travelling the whole way along the wall, uninterrupted from one end of a room to the other. At 75mm deep it gives the top of a run a properly architectural finish. Pieces measure 152mm, so 6.6 make up a linear metre. Supply is by the box: 4 lengths in each, covering 0.6 linear metres.

It belongs at the top of a half-height wall, where tiling stops and paint or paper takes over, and it is equally at home capping a full-height splashback or defining the head of a shower enclosure. The gloss is what makes the idea work: on a rich mid-blue, a curved face gathers light steadily along its whole length, and the run resolves as one deliberate horizontal — which is precisely what settles a wall at its top edge. Where the capping meets an outside angle, the External Corner Trim keeps the colour glazed right the way round it.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Windsor Blue tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. The glaze is impervious and unaffected by constant water, so these tiles are entirely at home in a shower enclosure, above a bath, behind a sink or across a wet-room wall. What matters is what sits behind and between them: a properly tanked substrate, a white flexible adhesive and a grout rated for wet areas. The tiles themselves never need sealing.

Can I use these on the floor?

No — Artworks is a wall range only. The ceramic body is not rated for foot traffic and the gloss glaze would scratch and lose its shine quickly underfoot. If you want a floor beneath a Windsor Blue wall, a geometric or encaustic-effect floor tile is the natural partner, and our team can help you pair one.

Will the colour be consistent across my order?

The Artworks glazes are applied over a pressed ceramic body, and slight variation from tile to tile is part of the character rather than a fault — it is what keeps a large tiled wall from looking printed. On a gloss mid-blue that variation reads as depth rather than as patchiness. Order the whole of a room in one go where you can, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Windsor Blue?

Use a white flexible adhesive. The grout is a real design decision here rather than a default. Brilliant white is a legitimate choice — it puts the tile squarely in the blue-and-white tradition and makes the wall read crisp and graphic — but it emphasises every joint, so your setting-out has to be accurate and the effect is a grid as much as a colour. If you would rather the blue carried the wall and the joints stayed quiet, use a soft mid-grey a shade or two lighter than the tile. The one to avoid is a warm beige or greige, which muddies a clean mid-blue and does it no favours. Grout haze shows readily on gloss, so sponge each section as you go.

Is Windsor Blue in stock, and how quickly can I have it?

The range is usually held in stock and we can normally despatch within a few working days; mouldings and trims occasionally run on a longer lead time, so it is worth a call on 01344 620211 before you plan the fitting week. UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000, and we can hold a delivery back until your site is ready.

How does Windsor Blue compare with the other blues in the Artworks range?

Windsor Blue is the versatile one. Original Style describe it as a versatile mid-blue, rich and glossy, like looking into deep water — and that is the point of it: it sits in the middle of the family, without the strong cast that makes the others more specific. The alternatives each pull in a direction. One is a warmer blue with a green cast to it. One is a deep indigo for a much more dramatic room. One is a blue-grey that shifts with the light and reads almost as a neutral. If you want a blue that behaves like a blue and works with most schemes, this is usually the answer — but order cut samples of two or three and look at them on the actual wall, because blues change more between rooms than any other family in the range.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Windsor Blue?

Fifteen: the 152mm field tile and its half tile, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Windsor Blue is not made as a large brick or as a bevelled metro tile, so a scheme needing one of those formats will have to take it from a different colour. Original Style also make rectangles, round-edge tiles, internal corners and corner wrapping pieces to order in this colour — those carry minimum quantities and longer lead times, so call us on 01344 620211 if you need one.

How do I finish the top of a half-height tiled wall?

With a moulding laid horizontally along the top course. The choice is a matter of weight: the Victoria and Plain Cornice at 75mm give a substantial architectural capping, the Egg & Dart and Dentil carry relief ornament, the Albert, Hogarth and Rope sit in the middle, and the Astragal, Sigma, Scroll and Omega are slim beads for a quieter line. All are supplied four to a box covering 0.6 linear metres. Measure the run, add 10%, and round up to whole boxes.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Use a white flexible adhesive. For grout, white is a legitimate and rather traditional answer on this blue — the blue-and-white combination is the oldest one in English tiling and it gives a crisp result — provided you accept that every joint along the run will be plainly visible, and set the pieces out accordingly. The quieter option is a soft mid-grey, pitched just off the tile's own depth of colour, which lets the blue lead. Warm beiges and greiges are the ones to leave alone; they take the clarity out of a mid-blue. Buff away grout haze before it hardens on the gloss.
  • Layout: Set the cornice at the height you want the tiling to stop, and make that decision before you tile — everything below works up to it. Dry-lay a metre or so first to see where the joints will fall, and centre the run on the principal wall so the cuts land in the corners. Where the capping continues around an outside angle, the External Corner Trim maintains a glazed edge.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
