Product story
A Clean Stop at the Top of the Tiling
A 152 x 75mm gloss ceramic cornice with an unornamented profile, glazed in the deepest green of the Artworks range — the Artworks Victorian Green Plain Cornice, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.
Every tiled wall has to end somewhere, and a cut top edge is not an ending. This cornice is the simplest way to close a run: a moulded section 75mm on the face, projecting gently from the wall so that it throws a shadow line across the top of the tiling and carries the eye along it. There is no ornament on it at all — it is a profile, not a pattern. Like the other linear pieces it is sold by the metre, four to a box covering 0.6 linear metres, at 6.6 pieces per metre of run.
Used at dado or half height it becomes the horizontal that divides the room, with a dark green wainscot below and cream or stone paintwork above — an arrangement Victorian rooms used constantly, and the one that lets you have this colour without giving the whole room over to it. Because the section is curved rather than flat, the glaze reads as a graded band instead of one even tone, the colour shifting steadily across the face as the profile turns away from the light. Against brass or antique gold fittings, that graduation is what keeps the top edge from looking abrupt.

Installation & care
Installation & care
- Adhesive & Grout: A white flexible adhesive, and grout kept dark and close in tone: deep grey, charcoal or a dark green-grey. Because the cornice is the line the eye follows around the room, a brilliant white joint here is a badly damaging choice — unsparing against a glaze this dark, and it breaks the run into visible segments instead of one continuous moulding. A mid grey does the same job less obviously and looks tired doing it. Take extra care wiping the curve of the section clean, as haze settles in the profile and shows plainly on a gloss this deep.
- Layout: Fix the cornice to a struck level line before the field tiling reaches it, so the last course below can be cut to fit rather than the cornice being forced to follow a drifting joint. Corners are mitred, and the mitres want cutting carefully on a wet saw: against a near-black glaze the exposed biscuit at a rough cut shows as a bright edge. If you are using the cornice to close a half-height run, hold the same height right around the room, including over door and window openings.
- Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
Samples
Tone, glaze and veining can read differently in your own light. Cut samples are free; sample postage is £4.99 (£8 for Original Style) and is refunded on tile orders over £50 using the code emailed with your sample order. Use the sample option in the buying panel, or call our Ascot team on 01344 620211 for help comparing colour, finish and quantities.
Delivery
In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.
Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.
When your order arrives
Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.
Returns
Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.
