An Unornamented Line to Close the Dado

Running 152 x 75mm with a shaped but entirely undecorated profile in deep green gloss, this is the Artworks Edwardian Green Plain Cornice, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

This cornice has one job and refuses to decorate it. Run along the top of a half-height wall, the profile projects slightly from the face of the tiling and casts a shadow beneath itself, giving the run a definite upper edge where the white or warm off-white paintwork begins. There is no beading on it, no repeat, no modelled pattern of any kind, and that is precisely its reason to exist: when the interest in a room already lies elsewhere — a geometric floor, a paper above the dado, a run of Art Nouveau joinery — the tiling can be closed without introducing something else to read.

Because the surface is unbroken, the gloss travels across it as one continuous highlight rather than a series of separate catches, which suits a deep and notably even green carrying a little less of the mottling a copper-based recipe would leave in it. It also has nowhere to trap dust and wipes down in a single pass, a real advantage at picture-rail height in a hallway or above the tiled dado of a bathroom — and with copper left out of the glaze altogether, that bathroom can be a genuinely wet one. Where the dado turns out into a room the cornice is mitred at the angle, or run a short distance along the next wall and stopped. There is a purpose-made wrapping trim, but it belongs to Original Style's special-order list rather than to our shelves, and anything made that way brings a minimum and a lead time with it — telephone us early if the design depends on one.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Edwardian Green tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes — and this is the colour that was made for it. Original Style developed Edwardian Green specifically for wet areas: showers, wet rooms, bathrooms and the wall behind a kitchen sink. It is made with a copper-free glaze recipe, which stands up to constant water better than the copper-based greens do. You still need a properly tanked substrate, a white flexible adhesive and a grout rated for wet areas, but the glaze itself is impervious and needs no sealing.

Can I use these on the floor?

No — Artworks is a wall range only. The ceramic body is not rated for foot traffic and the gloss glaze would scratch and lose its shine quickly underfoot. For a floor to sit beneath an Edwardian Green wall, a Victorian-style geometric floor or an encaustic-effect tile is the historically correct partner, and our team can help you pair one.

Will the colour be consistent across my order?

The Artworks glazes are applied over a pressed ceramic body and slight variation from tile to tile is part of the character rather than a fault — it is what stops a large tiled wall looking printed. Variation between production batches can be a little greater, so order the whole of a room in one go where you can, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Edwardian Green?

Use a white flexible tile adhesive, which keeps the glaze reading true. For grout, aim for the middle: a mid to deep grey, or a soft green-grey close to the tile's own tone. Brilliant white draws a hard bright grid over a colour this saturated and fights it. Charcoal or black goes the other way and weighs the green down until it reads as a far darker colour than it is — precisely the effect Edwardian tiling was moving away from. A grey a shade or two darker than the wall you want lets the green stay green.

Is Edwardian Green in stock, and how quickly can I have it?

The range is usually held in stock and we can normally despatch within a few working days; mouldings and trims occasionally run on a longer lead time, so it is worth a call on 01344 620211 before you plan the fitting week. UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000, and we can hold a delivery back until your site is ready.

How does Edwardian Green compare with the other greens in the Artworks range?

Edwardian Green is the wet-area sibling of Victorian Green. Original Style describe it as offering most of the grandeur of Victorian Green while using a copper-free glaze recipe, which makes it the more hardwearing of the two in a shower or wet room. The trade-off is slightly less of the depth and natural variation that copper-based glazes give, so it reads a shade more subdued and a little more even across a wall. The other three greens are different colours rather than different depths: Pavilion Green is a brighter, more saturated mid green, Palm Green leans warm and leafy, and Jade Breeze is the palest, with a cool blue-grey cast. Cut samples are the only reliable way to choose between them, and we are happy to send several.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Edwardian Green?

We stock seventeen: the 152mm field tile and its half tile, a 228 x 75mm large brick, bevelled metro tiles in 150 x 75mm and 75 x 75mm, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Original Style also make the Artworks external corner trim to order in Edwardian Green, so if a scheme needs a wrapped outside corner rather than a mitre, call us on 01344 620211 — made-to-order pieces can carry a minimum order quantity and a longer lead time. Tell us the room and we will work out what you need.

How do I finish the top of a half-height tiled wall?

With a moulding laid horizontally along the top course. The choice is a matter of weight: the Victoria and Plain Cornice at 75mm give a substantial architectural capping, the Egg & Dart and Dentil carry relief ornament, the Albert, Hogarth and Rope sit in the middle, and the Astragal, Sigma, Scroll and Omega are slim beads for a quieter line. All are supplied four to a box covering 0.6 linear metres. Measure the run, add 10%, and round up.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: White flexible adhesive, and grout kept to a mid or deep grey, or a green-grey close in tone to the glaze. An undecorated profile has nowhere to hide a joint, so the colour choice shows: brilliant white breaks the run into visible segments and glares against a saturated green, while charcoal or black loads the line with a weight that makes the whole dado read darker than it is. Deep gloss shows haze, so clear it while the grout is still fresh.
  • Layout: Establish the top line of the tiling first and set the cornice to it, working from the most visible corner outwards so that any short piece finishes where it will not be noticed. Dry-lay the whole run before fixing.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
