Orléans Blue Sky Blue, Sea Blue, Midnight Blue on Brilliant White Ceramic Wall Tiles - 152 x 152mm
Experience the captivating beauty of tri-tonal design with our Orléans Blue tiles from the exclusive Odyssey range. These handcrafted 152 x 152mm ceramic tiles showcase an extraordinary tapestry pattern featuring three harmonious blues—ethereal sky blue, dynamic sea blue, and dramatic midnight blue—woven together against brilliant white to create unprecedented depth and movement. Meticulously hand-finished in our Devon studio by skilled artisans, each tile captures the rich tradition of Orléans tapestry weaving where multiple thread colours created dimensional textiles, now translated into enduring ceramic art with a lustrous gloss finish that amplifies each blue tone's unique character while creating seamless colour transitions.
Why Choose Orléans Blue Tiles?
The Orléans Blue design represents a revolutionary interpretation of multi-tonal tapestry work in ceramic form, inspired by the renowned textile traditions of Orléans, France, where master weavers pioneered the use of graduated colour palettes to create dimensional effects in flat textiles. This sophisticated pattern features three distinct yet harmonious blues that dance across the surface—sky blue bringing lightness and air, sea blue adding vibrant energy, and midnight blue providing anchoring depth—creating visual complexity that shifts and evolves with changing light throughout the day. The brilliant white base acts as both canvas and breathing space, allowing each blue tone to sing while maintaining overall harmony.
What sets Orléans Blue apart is its remarkable ability to capture the full spectrum of blue in a single tile design. The tri-tonal approach creates natural gradation that mimics the way we experience blue in nature—from pale morning skies through ocean depths to twilight darkness. This colour journey within each tile eliminates the static quality of single-colour designs, creating surfaces that feel alive with chromatic movement. The handcrafted nature ensures each tile possesses unique distribution of the three blues, with some tiles showing more sky blue's ethereal quality, others emphasising sea blue's vibrancy, and still others featuring midnight blue's drama—when installed together, they create an organic tapestry effect impossible to achieve with mass production.
The 152 x 152mm format (approximately 6 inches) provides the perfect canvas for this complex colour story while maintaining practical installation proportions. The gloss finish performs triple duty—intensifying each blue's individual character, smoothing the transitions between colours, and creating an almost liquid appearance that recalls both sky and sea. This considered finish choice makes the tiles particularly effective in spaces where you want sophistication without commitment to a single bold colour—perfect for those who love blue but fear monotony.
Perfect Spaces for Orléans Blue Tiles
Kitchen Splashbacks & Culinary Spaces
Transform your kitchen with Orléans Blue tiles that bring the full spectrum of nature's favourite colour to cooking spaces. The tri-tonal blue design creates extraordinary visual interest that evolves throughout the day—morning light emphasises the sky blue for fresh starts, afternoon sun brings out the sea blue's energy, while evening lighting deepens the midnight tones for intimate dining preparation. The gloss finish creates a liquid-like surface that seems to ripple with colour, making splashbacks feel like windows to ocean views. The multiple blues work brilliantly with any cabinet colour—the lighter sky blue softens dark cabinetry, sea blue energises white kitchens, while midnight blue adds sophistication to natural wood. The reflective surface resists staining while being effortlessly cleanable, maintaining the complex colour story without intensive maintenance. For range cooker installations, these tiles create mesmerising focal points where the three blues seem to shift and flow with the heat shimmer. Master Bathrooms & Spa Retreats
Create aquatic sanctuaries with Orléans Blue tiles that capture every mood of water in ceramic form. In shower enclosures, the three blues create an immersive experience reminiscent of swimming through colour gradients—from shallow sky-blue waters through vibrant sea-blue waves to midnight-blue depths. The gloss finish enhances this aquatic illusion, with running water creating prismatic effects that make the blues appear to flow and merge. The colour graduation naturally guides the eye upward, making bathrooms feel taller and more spacious. Use as feature walls behind freestanding baths where the tri-tonal design creates sophisticated backdrops that change character with bath-time moods—bright and energising for morning routines, deep and relaxing for evening soaks. En-suites become personal spas when partially clad, the multiple blues providing variety within cohesion. The varying tones work beautifully with both chrome for contemporary schemes and brass for warmer approaches. Browse our bathroom wall tiles collection for alternatives.
Children's Bedrooms & Play Spaces
Bring wonder and sophistication to young spaces with Orléans Blue tiles that grow with children through different life stages. The three blues create engaging visual stories—sky blue for daydreaming, sea blue for adventure, midnight blue for restful sleep—all within a sophisticated framework that won't need updating as children mature. The colour variety prevents the monotony that children often tire of, while the gloss finish creates an almost magical surface that catches light like treasure. Create feature walls behind beds where the blues inspire both imagination and calm, or use as splash protection in craft areas where the easy-clean surface handles creative chaos. The pattern's sophistication means these tiles transition seamlessly from nursery through teens without seeming babyish. In playrooms, the dynamic colour movement energises without overwhelming, while the ceramic durability withstands years of active use. The multiple blues coordinate with any toy colour without clashing. View our victorian wall tiles for complementary options.
Dining Rooms & Entertainment Spaces
Transform dining areas with Orléans Blue tiles that provide sophisticated colour without overwhelming dinner conversation. The tri-tonal design creates visual interest that shifts with candlelight—sky blue brightening intimate gatherings, sea blue adding energy to parties, midnight blue creating drama for formal occasions. Behind buffets or bars, these tiles create dynamic backdrops where the three blues seem to dance with reflected glassware and bottles. The multiple tones mean these tiles coordinate with varied dining chair upholstery and table settings without limiting your decorative choices. In open-plan spaces, use Orléans tiles to define dining zones with colour that's bold yet versatile—the graduation from light to dark blues creates natural transitions between areas. The gloss finish multiplies the effect of pendant lighting, creating colour depth that makes dining spaces feel special. For breakfast nooks, the lighter blues energise morning routines while deeper tones add coziness for evening meals. Discover more options in our feature wall tiles collection.
Conservatories & Garden Rooms
Bridge interior and exterior with Orléans Blue tiles that echo sky and water in botanical settings. The three blues create natural harmony with outdoor views—sky blue reflecting actual skies, sea blue echoing water features, midnight blue grounding the space during darker seasons. In conservatories, these tiles provide permanent colour that complements changing seasonal plantings without competing with flowering displays. The gloss finish amplifies natural light, making plant-filled spaces feel even brighter while the multiple blues prevent the cold feeling sometimes associated with single-tone blue schemes. Use as dado rails protecting walls from plant watering while adding decorative interest, or create feature walls that maintain visual interest during winter months when gardens are dormant. The tri-tonal design means these tiles work equally well with tropical plants and English garden schemes. Sun rooms benefit from the heat-reflecting properties of the gloss finish while the colour variety prevents monotony in spaces used year-round. Commercial & Hospitality Applications
Perfect for businesses seeking sophisticated colour with broad appeal. Hotels use Orléans Blue tiles to create memorable spaces that feel both luxurious and approachable—the three blues ensuring every guest finds a tone they connect with. Restaurants achieve dynamic atmospheres that shift from bright lunch service to intimate dinners simply through lighting changes that emphasise different blues. The tri-tonal design photographs beautifully from any angle, providing consistent social media appeal. Retail environments benefit from the colour energy without the commitment of single bold tones—the variety keeps spaces interesting during long shopping sessions. Medical and wellness spaces appreciate the proven calming effects of blue while the colour variety prevents institutional monotony. Spas particularly value the aquatic associations, with the three blues creating journey-like experiences through treatment areas. The gloss finish meets commercial cleaning requirements while maintaining colour vibrancy despite heavy use.

Installation & Maintenance Guide
Surface Preparation Requirements
Success with Orléans Blue tiles begins with meticulous substrate preparation, particularly crucial given the complex tri-tonal design and gloss finish that will highlight any imperfections. Walls must be perfectly flat, clean, and stable—any undulations will disrupt the colour flow and be magnified by the reflective surface. Remove all existing coverings completely, ensuring no texture remains that might telegraph through. The multiple blues make substrate consistency critical as any variation in adhesive thickness will affect colour perception. Prime all surfaces with high-quality white primer—essential for maintaining the brilliance of all three blue tones. In wet areas, comprehensive tanking protects your investment in these complex tiles. Check walls with laser levels—the interplay of three colours demands perfection, with variations over 2mm per metre requiring correction.
Professional Installation Techniques
The tri-tonal nature of Orléans Blue tiles requires thoughtful installation to achieve optimal colour distribution. Before beginning, unbox multiple boxes and mix tiles to ensure even distribution of sky, sea, and midnight blue concentrations—some tiles naturally emphasise different blues, and random mixing creates the most organic effect. Use premium white adhesive to maintain colour clarity across all three blue tones. Apply adhesive with consistent technique ensuring 100% coverage—any voids risk cracking and colour distortion.
Dry-lay sections first to preview colour flow, adjusting tile placement for pleasing gradations or intentional groupings depending on your design intent. Some installers prefer creating subtle gradients from lighter to darker tiles, while others seek random distribution—both approaches work beautifully. Maintain precise 2-3mm grout joints—consistency is crucial for the complex pattern to flow naturally. The gloss finish demands perfect alignment as any lippage disrupts both colour flow and light reflection. Handle tiles carefully to preserve the pristine gloss surface, keeping protective materials until grouting begins. Consider photographing the dry-lay arrangement to maintain pattern intention during actual installation.
Grout Selection & Application
- Brilliant White Grout: Maximises colour separation, emphasises the tri-tonal effect
- Pearl Grey: Subtle option that unifies the three blues
- Sky Blue: Harmonises with the lightest tones for colour flow
- Sea Blue: Matches the middle tone for cohesive appearance
- Charcoal Grey: Grounds all three blues equally
Mix grout with precise water ratios—consistency affects how it interacts with each blue tone. Apply carefully to avoid scratching the gloss surface, working diagonally across tiles. The three blues show grout haze differently—sky blue shows it least, midnight blue most prominently—requiring thorough cleaning. Remove excess immediately with damp sponges, rinsing frequently to prevent film formation across the colour spectrum. Polish with microfibre cloths, paying attention to how each blue responds—darker areas need extra attention to restore full gloss brilliance.
Daily Care & Long-term Maintenance
The gloss finish of Orléans Blue tiles simplifies maintenance despite the complex colour story, though different blues show wear differently. Daily dusting maintains the colour vibrancy—the darker midnight sections show dust more than sky blue areas. The smooth surface prevents dirt embedding but water marks show variably across the three tones—keep microfibre cloths accessible for quick buffing. Weekly cleaning with pH-neutral products maintains all three blues equally—avoid anything that might affect different pigments differently.
In kitchens, the varying blues disguise different types of splashes naturally—lighter tones hide water marks while darker blues conceal oil splashes. The gloss finish prevents absorption regardless of colour. Bathrooms benefit from squeegee use to prevent mineral deposits that show most on midnight blue sections. The multiple blues mean minor water marking appears as natural variation rather than obvious spotting. Bi-annual deep cleaning with specialised glass tile products restores the full spectrum's brilliance. The colour variety means tiles age gracefully—any subtle changes appear as natural evolution rather than obvious wear. The gloss protection ensures all three blues maintain their distinct character indefinitely.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do the three different blues work together?
The three blues in Orléans tiles are carefully calibrated to create natural harmony—sky blue at approximately 30%, sea blue at 40%, and midnight blue at 30%, though handcrafting means each tile varies slightly. They share undertones that prevent clashing while maintaining distinct identities. The gradation mimics natural blue experiences from sky through ocean to deep water, creating instinctive visual flow. The brilliant white base provides consistent grounding that unifies all three tones. When installed, the blues create movement and depth impossible with single colours, while the gloss finish smooths transitions between tones.
Will the multiple colours make my space feel busy?
Despite featuring three blues, Orléans tiles create surprisingly calming effects because the colours exist within one family. The gradation feels natural rather than chaotic—like looking at the ocean with its varied depths. The handcrafted distribution means colours flow organically rather than creating harsh patterns. The brilliant white base provides visual breathing room, preventing colour overwhelm. Most people find the variety more restful than monotonous single colours, as the eye has interesting but harmonious variations to explore. The gloss finish unifies the colours through consistent surface treatment.
How do I coordinate other colours with three different blues?
The tri-tonal design actually makes coordination easier as you're not locked into matching one specific blue. Warm colours like coral or yellow pick up the energy of sea blue. Cool greys harmonise with midnight blue's sophistication. Whites and creams complement sky blue's freshness. The variety means these tiles work with both warm and cool palettes—choose accessories that speak to whichever blue you want to emphasise. Natural materials like wood and stone find easy harmony with the organic colour flow. The key is choosing colours that complement one of the three blues rather than trying to match all of them.
Do these tiles work in small spaces?
Orléans tiles can actually enhance small spaces through their colour variety. The gradation from light to dark creates depth perception that makes walls appear further away. The sky blue elements keep spaces bright while midnight blue adds sophistication without overwhelming. The gloss finish reflects light to maintain spaciousness. In powder rooms or small bathrooms, the colour journey provides interest that makes confined spaces feel special rather than cramped. Consider using more tiles with sky blue dominance in very small spaces, saving midnight-blue-heavy tiles for larger areas.
How many tiles do I need for a typical bathroom?
For a standard bathroom with one fully tiled shower wall (2.4m x 1m) plus splashback behind a 600mm vanity, you'll need approximately 3 square metres including 10% wastage. With 43 tiles per square metre, that's roughly 129 tiles or 26 boxes. For a feature wall in a family bathroom (2m x 2.4m), you'll need approximately 210 tiles or 42 boxes. Remember the handcrafted nature means ordering all tiles together ensures colour consistency. Our team provides precise calculations based on your specific dimensions.
Can I request specific blue distributions?
While we cannot guarantee exact colour ratios due to the handcrafted nature, we can note preferences for lighter or darker overall effects when you order. Each tile is unique, but batches tend to maintain consistent overall colour balance. We recommend ordering 10% extra and selecting tiles during installation to achieve your desired effect—perhaps grouping lighter tiles in smaller spaces or creating gradients in larger installations. Many customers find the natural variation creates the most pleasing results, trusting the artisanal process.
