A Dado Cap Made for Daily Life

At chair-back height, where a tiled wall most needs a proper cap, sits this stepped ceramic profile in deep indigo gloss, 152 x 40mm — the Artworks Royal Blue Albert Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

The Albert is a working profile before it is a decorative one. Its stepped section gives a half-height run a firm, squared finish at the top, and because it lands at about the height of a chair back it spends its life taking the knocks a dado is there to take: pushed-in chairs in a hall, a coat, a hoover, a bucket. Glazed ceramic is the right material for that. It does not mark, it never wants repainting, and it wipes clean with a damp cloth in the time it takes to walk past.

It also does the more important job of dividing the wall. An indigo of this depth holds very little of the morning and returns almost none of it by dusk, so a room taken in it from floor to ceiling closes in as the day goes; a dado run closed with the Albert, with plain plaster or a pale paint above, puts the colour at the height where it does the work and leaves the wall above to carry whatever light there is. Where the dado turns out around a chimney breast or a boxed pipe, we stock the corner trim in the same Royal Blue glaze — 152 x 30mm, four to a box — to take the angle cleanly.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Royal Blue tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. The glaze is impervious and unaffected by constant water, so these tiles are entirely at home in a shower enclosure, above a bath, behind a sink or across a wet-room wall. What matters is what sits behind and between them: a properly tanked substrate, a white flexible adhesive and a grout rated for wet areas. The tiles themselves never need sealing.

Can I use these on the floor?

No — Artworks is a wall range only. The ceramic body is not rated for foot traffic and the gloss glaze would scratch and lose its shine quickly underfoot. For a floor to sit beneath a Royal Blue wall, a black and white geometric or an encaustic-effect tile is the natural partner, and our team can help you pair one.

Will the colour be consistent across my order?

The Artworks glazes are applied over a pressed ceramic body, and slight variation from tile to tile is part of the character rather than a fault — it is what stops a large tiled wall looking printed. On a colour this deep the variation reads as movement in the glaze rather than as patchiness. Order the whole of a room in one go where you can, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Royal Blue?

Use a white flexible adhesive. For grout, go dark and close in tone: a deep grey, a charcoal, or a blue-grey pitched near the tile's own depth. Against an indigo this deep, brilliant white draws a bright net across the wall and the tile ends up disappearing behind its own joints. A mid grey is the other one to avoid — too light to belong to the colour and too dark to read as a deliberate contrast, so it simply looks tired. Grout haze shows more readily on a deep gloss glaze than on a pale one, so sponge each section down as you go rather than leaving it.

Is Royal Blue in stock, and how quickly can I have it?

The range is usually held in stock and we can normally despatch within a few working days; mouldings and trims occasionally run on a longer lead time, so it is worth a call on 01344 620211 before you plan the fitting week. UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000, and we can hold a delivery back until your site is ready.

How does Royal Blue compare with the other blues in the Artworks range?

Royal Blue is the deep one. Original Style describe it as a deep indigo with an air of nobility, and it is the only blue in the range that behaves like a dark colour rather than a coloured one — it absorbs light where the others return it. The alternatives are all lighter and all pull in different directions: one is a warmer blue with a green cast, one a versatile mid-blue, and one a blue-grey that shifts with the light and reads almost as a neutral. If you are weighing Royal Blue against any of them, order cut samples of both and look at them on the actual wall at the time of day you use the room — a colour this deep changes more between rooms than a mid-tone does.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Royal Blue?

Eighteen — the fullest set of any of the blues. The 152mm field tile and its half tile, a 228 x 75mm large brick, bevelled metro tiles in 150 x 75mm and 75 x 75mm, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings: Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Original Style also make rectangles, round-edge tiles, internal corners and corner wrapping pieces to order in this colour — those carry minimum quantities and longer lead times, so call us on 01344 620211 if a scheme needs one.

How do I finish the top of a half-height tiled wall?

With a moulding laid horizontally along the top course. The choice is a matter of weight: the Victoria and Plain Cornice at 75mm give a substantial architectural capping, the Egg & Dart and Dentil carry relief ornament, the Albert, Hogarth and Rope sit in the middle, and the Astragal, Sigma, Scroll and Omega are slim beads for a quieter line. On a deep colour a moulding earns its keep twice over, since the modelling gives the glaze somewhere to gather and the top of the run gets a defined edge rather than stopping dead. All are supplied four to a box covering 0.6 linear metres. Measure the run, add 10%, and round up.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: White flexible adhesive, and a grout chosen dark and close — charcoal, or a deep grey, or a blue-grey at something like the weight of the tile. Brilliant white against an indigo of this weight is a bright interruption every 152mm along the cap, and the run stops reading as one continuous line. Nor does a mid grey rescue it. A dado cap is read as a single horizontal from one end of the room to the other, and a joint of middling tone chops that line into 152mm units without ever declaring itself as a colour, so the run stops being architecture and becomes a count of pieces. Deep gloss glazes hold haze, so buff the faces back well once the grout has firmed.
  • Layout: Fix the cap first and tile down to it, rather than tiling up and hoping the last course lands right — the dado line is what the eye checks, so set it from a level and not from the floor. If the tiling continues through a door reveal, carry the cap through with it at the same height.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
