A Stepped Edge with Victorian Manners

A 40mm stepped moulding with a crisp shoulder and a soft return, in the boldest colour Artworks makes: the Artworks Ochre Albert Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

The Albert is a stepped section rather than a curved one — a flat upper face, a defined shoulder, and a shallow cove dropping back to the wall. That geometry makes it a natural edging piece: it presents a clean straight line along the top and tucks neatly against whatever finishes below. At 152 x 40mm it is substantial enough to read as a proper moulding, yet restrained enough to carry right through a room.

It caps half-tiled walls, edges bath panels and frames tiled recesses. The step is precisely what the ochre glaze exploits. Direct light lands flat on the top face and gives the truest reading of the colour, while the cove beneath sits a couple of tones deeper — one piece, two versions of the same yellow. Placed against dark green or oxblood joinery, that difference between lit face and shaded cove is what stops the run looking like a painted stripe.

⚠ Installation & Care Tips

  • Adhesive & Grout: Fix with a white flexible tile adhesive and grout in a warm sand, buff or soft mid-grey shade. Brilliant white is the one grout to rule out: on a glaze this saturated it draws a hard white grid straight across the wall.
  • Layout: Ochre does not stock a handed Albert corner, so external returns are mitred on site — cut both pieces at 45 degrees, dry-fit the joint before buttering, and dress the arris with a rubbing stone. Internal angles are simply butted and grouted.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Artworks Ochre tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. Artworks is specified for both wet and dry wall areas, so Ochre is at home in a shower enclosure, a wet room or around a bath. The background must be sound, dry and properly tanked, and a flexible waterproof adhesive and grout used throughout the wet zone. A saturated colour like this one is particularly effective in a shower, where the glaze catches the light and the steam keeps it looking freshly wet.

Can Artworks Ochre be used on a floor?

No. Artworks Ochre is a glazed ceramic wall tile and is not rated for floors. The glaze would scratch and wear through in traffic, and it offers no meaningful slip resistance underfoot. Use it on the walls and choose a porcelain, natural stone or encaustic-effect tile for the floor beneath — our team can help you find a floor that sits well with the ochre.

Will Artworks Ochre match my existing tiles?

Ochre is a strong, saturated colour and shade can shift a little between production batches, which is far more visible in a deep tone than in a white. Order the whole job in one go so it comes from a single batch, keep a few spare tiles from that batch for future repairs, and if you are matching to tiles already on the wall, ask us for a sample to hold against them before you commit.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Artworks Ochre?

Fix with a white flexible tile adhesive and allow a 2-3mm joint. For grout, a warm sand, buff or soft mid-grey sits comfortably against the ochre. Avoid a brilliant white grout — against a colour this saturated it reads as a hard white grid drawn over the wall, and it fights the warmth of the glaze rather than supporting it.

Is Artworks Ochre in stock, and how quickly can it be delivered?

Ochre is usually held in stock across the range. We deliver throughout the UK, and delivery is free on orders over £1,000; below that it is calculated at checkout. If your project is on a deadline, or you need a large quantity of one piece, call the showroom on 01344 620211 and we will confirm availability before you order.

How does Artworks Ochre compare with the other Artworks colours?

Ochre is the boldest colour in the range. Where Brilliant White is cool and optical, Vintage White is the warmest and most aged, County White is a soft creamy Victorian white and Ivory is a neutral cream with a grey undertone, Ochre leaves the white family entirely for a deep golden yellow. Palladian Beige is the quiet warm stone tone; Ochre is what happens when that warmth is turned all the way up. It is a colour to commit to rather than a backdrop.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which Artworks pieces are available in Ochre?

Seventeen pieces: the 152 x 152mm field tile, the 152 x 76mm half tile, bevelled metro tiles in 150 x 75mm and 75 x 75mm, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Albert, Astragal, Dentil, Egg & Dart, Hogarth, Omega, Rope, Scroll and Sigma. Ochre does not include handed corner pieces, an internal corner trim, wrapping pieces, large bricks, rectangles or rounded edges; where those are needed the detail is mitred or butted on site.

Are there matching corner pieces for the Ochre Albert Moulding?

Not in Ochre. The handed Albert corners are produced for some of the white colourways only, so in Ochre the corners are mitred on site. Cut them with a wet cutter and a fine blade, and turn any slight imperfection towards the less visible side of the return.
