Description
A Classical Order, Fired in Golden Yellow
A 65mm classical relief band alternating ovolo and arrowhead across a deep golden glaze: the Artworks Ochre Egg & Dart Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.
Egg and dart is among the oldest ornaments in Western architecture, cut into Ionic capitals and cornices for two and a half thousand years before it ever reached a bathroom wall. This 152 x 65mm piece reproduces it faithfully — a row of rounded eggs, each held in a shallow shell, separated by tapering darts. The repeat is regular enough to run for metres without looking busy, and modelled deeply enough to throw a proper shadow.
It suits the top of a tiled dado, the border of a bath panel or the cap of a splashback, and it sits particularly well below the Plain Cornice where a scheme wants two layers of ornament. Ochre changes what that ornament does. On a white glaze the eggs read as pale sculpture; on this one the shadow behind every dart darkens to burnt honey while the crowns pick up a bright gold highlight, so the whole run looks closer to gilded plasterwork than to tile. Victorian builders reached for the earth pigments — yellow ochre, raw sienna — because they were permanent and utterly reliable, and the colour still reads as period-correct against dark green or oxblood joinery.

Installation & care
Installation & care
- Adhesive & Grout: Use a white flexible tile adhesive and finish in a warm sand, buff or soft mid-grey grout; brilliant white is the one to leave on the shelf, since it draws a hard pale grid over a saturated colour. Work the grout into the joints only, and lift it out of the egg-and-dart relief before it begins to go off.
- Layout: Plan the run outwards from the most visible corner so the repeat is not broken awkwardly at the end of a wall — the eggs are read as a rhythm, and a half-egg at the stop is conspicuous.
- Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
