Classical Rhythm, Held in Glaze

A 152 x 65mm glazed ceramic moulding carrying the classical egg-and-dart enrichment, in a saturated green of real depth: the Artworks Pavilion Green Egg & Dart Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

Egg and dart is one of the oldest running ornaments in Western architecture: alternating ovals and pointed darts, carried along a convex face, borrowed from Greek and Roman cornices and never really out of use since. Here it is modelled at 65mm on the face — a considered middle weight, with enough repeat to be read across a room but not so much projection that it takes the room over. Every piece is cut to the same 152mm module as the field tile, so the repeat runs on unbroken from one length to the next. It is sold by the metre: four pieces to a box covering 0.6 linear metres, at 6.6 pieces per metre, so a 1.8-metre splashback run takes 12 pieces, or exactly three boxes.

A colour this saturated transforms an ornamented profile. The glaze runs thick between the eggs and behind the darts and darkens there almost to a racing green, while the rounded crowns, where the coat is thinnest, stay bright and glossy. That is strong contrast, not a gentle shadow, and it means the ornament holds its shape from the far side of a room and changes as the light swings round during the day. It works capping a dado, above a range splashback, framing a recess, or as a mid-wall band on a long elevation. Against mahogany, a black and white geometric floor and unlacquered brass, this is a colour and a profile that belong to the same century.

⚠ Installation & Care Tips

  • Adhesive & Grout: White flexible adhesive is the right bedding. For the joints, resist the pale grout your eye expects and go a good deal deeper — a mid grey or a green-grey close to the tile's own depth, cool in cast rather than warm. Brilliant white against this green is uncomfortably stark, ruling a hard grid across the run and lending the room the character of a swimming baths, while cream and ivory drift yellow beside it and look grubby long before they are. On an ornamented piece, keep the grout out of the modelling: point the joints narrowly, then wash the eggs and darts clean while it is still soft, because once it sets in the hollows the ornament loses the very shadow that makes it.
  • Layout: A running ornament wants to begin and end on purpose. Set the length out so that a whole piece lands at each end of a splashback, or so the repeat falls symmetrically either side of a window or a mirror, and accept a slightly awkward cut in a corner in exchange. Fit a plain band of tiling immediately beneath it so the eye has somewhere to rest; two ornamented profiles stacked one on the other simply compete.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Artworks Pavilion Green tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. Artworks is specified for both wet and dry wall areas, so Pavilion Green is at home in a shower enclosure, a wet room or around a bath. The background must be sound, dry and properly tanked, with a flexible waterproof adhesive and grout throughout the wet zone. A saturated green is at its most dramatic wet — under running water the glaze deepens towards bottle green and the wall reads several shades darker than it does dry.

Can I use Artworks Pavilion Green on the floor?

No. Artworks is a wall tile range only. The glaze is not rated for foot traffic and would scratch and dull quickly underfoot, and a gloss surface of this kind is slippery when wet. A strong green wall wants a floor that holds its own without competing — a black and white geometric, a plain black, or a warm terracotta quarry all work well beneath it. Call 01344 620211 and we will suggest something.

Will every Pavilion Green tile be exactly the same shade?

There is slight variation between production batches. On a saturated colour this shows differently from a pale one: rather than a visible half-shade shift, you may see a subtle difference in depth between one batch and another, which reads as patchiness across a large expanse. Order the whole quantity for a room at once, including your wastage allowance, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out. If you are adding to existing tiling, send us a photograph and we will give you an honest view.

What adhesive and grout colour should I use with Pavilion Green?

White flexible adhesive. For grout, go deeper than instinct suggests: a mid grey or a soft green-grey, closer in depth to the tile than to the joint you might choose on a pale colour. Two to avoid. Brilliant white is the classic mistake on a strong green — the contrast is severe, it draws a hard grid over the wall and pushes the whole thing towards a sports hall or a swimming baths. And a cream or ivory grout turns yellow against this green and simply looks dirty. Close in tone, cool rather than warm.

Is Pavilion Green in stock, and how quickly can it be delivered?

Pavilion Green is usually held in stock across the range, field and half tiles and the full set of mouldings alike. We will confirm availability and a delivery date for your exact quantity when you order, and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000. If a piece is temporarily out we will tell you the lead time before you commit rather than after. Call 01344 620211 or visit us at 67 High Street, Ascot.

How does Pavilion Green compare with the other Artworks greens?

There are three, and only one of them is a strong colour. Pavilion Green is the saturated one — a confident mid green with real depth, the colour of painted outdoor joinery rather than a tint. Palm Green is a soft warm leaf green and Jade Breeze a pale cool sage; both are gentle enough to tile a whole room in, where Pavilion Green is a colour you make a decision about. If you want green as a background, choose one of the other two. If you want green to be the point of the room, this is the one. Order samples of all three and see them together.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Artworks Pavilion Green?

Fifteen pieces: the 152 x 152mm field tile, the 152 x 76mm half tile, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Pavilion Green does not include a large brick tile, bevelled metro tiles, relief-moulded decorative tiles, handed corner pieces, an internal corner trim, wrapping pieces or rounded-edge tiles. Everything is sold by the box.
