Description

Two Thousand Years of Ornament: Artworks Brilliant White Egg & Dart Moulding 152 x 65mm

A deep 152 x 65mm ceramic moulding carrying the classical egg-and-dart relief, in gloss Brilliant White — from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

Alternating oval and point, the egg-and-dart is among the oldest ornaments in Western architecture — carved on Greek temples, cut into Roman cornices and revived with enthusiasm by Georgian and Victorian designers. Reproduced here in glazed ceramic, it gives a tiled wall genuine period authority.

At 65mm it is one of the deeper Artworks profiles, which suits it to a generous dado line or a high-level band beneath a cornice. The relief is pronounced enough that the Brilliant White glaze pools and thins across it, producing a play of light and shadow along the whole run.

Installation & care

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Use a white flexible tile adhesive and clear grout from the relief while it is still workable — residue in the detail is difficult to remove once set.
  • Layout: Plan the run so the egg-and-dart motif continues cleanly through the centre of the wall, taking any part-pieces at the ends. Allow around 10% extra for cuts and mitres.
  • Cleaning: No sealing required. Warm water, a mild detergent and a soft brush will keep the ornament crisp; avoid abrasive pads.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Egg & Dart motif?

One of the oldest ornaments in Western architecture, alternating an oval egg with a pointed dart along the length of a moulding. It appears on Greek and Roman cornices and was revived enthusiastically by Georgian and Victorian architects, which is why it sits so naturally in a period bathroom.

How is the Egg & Dart moulding sold?

By the box of 4 pieces, covering 0.6 linear metres at 6.6 pieces per linear metre. At 65mm it is one of the deeper Artworks profiles, so allow for its height when setting out your dado line.

Will Brilliant White match across the different Artworks shapes and mouldings?

Every Artworks piece is finished in the same Brilliant White glaze, so field tiles, half tiles, mouldings, skirtings and corners are designed to be used together. As with any glazed ceramic there can be slight variation between production batches, so we recommend ordering everything for a scheme at the same time.

What adhesive and grout do you recommend for Artworks ceramic tiles?

Always use a white flexible tile adhesive — a grey adhesive can shadow through a white glaze and dull it. Allow a 2-3mm joint and choose a white grout for a seamless, luminous wall, or a soft grey to draw the eye to the layout.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.
