Classical Ornament, Rendered In Treacle Brown

A 152 x 65mm classical relief border in deep glossy brown: the Artworks Teapot Brown Egg & Dart Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

Egg-and-dart is one of the oldest ornaments in Western architecture — an alternating rhythm of rounded ovals and pointed darts, cut into Greek and Roman cornices and copied by every century since. Here it is modelled across a 65mm ceramic border, the repeat sized so that a single 152mm piece carries a complete sequence and butts cleanly into the next without the pattern stumbling.

It suits a dado line, the head of a splashback, or the frame of a fireplace — anywhere a plain band would look under-dressed. A dark glaze suits this ornament better than any pale one: the colour gathers to near-black in the hollows between the eggs and the darts while the rounded crowns stay lit and glassy, so the carving reads with a sculptural contrast that a white simply cannot produce. Set above cream paint, with aged oak nearby, it looks salvaged rather than bought.

⚠ Installation & Care Tips

  • Adhesive & Grout: Use a white flexible adhesive. For grout, a soft biscuit or a warm taupe sits comfortably against the brown; a brilliant white does not, and will grid the wall with hard pale lines — step one or two shades lighter than the tile instead. Clear grout from the ground between the eggs and the darts while it is still workable.
  • Layout: Because the ornament repeats, plan the run so the sequence is not cut mid-egg at a visible end. Start from the most-seen corner and work outwards, taking any part-piece into the least conspicuous return.
  • Cleaning: The glaze is non-porous, so sealing is unnecessary. Clean with warm water and a mild detergent, and avoid scouring pads or acidic limescale treatments, which take the gloss off permanently.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Artworks Teapot Brown tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. Artworks is specified for both wet and dry wall areas, so Teapot Brown is at home in a shower enclosure, a wet room or around a bath. The background must be sound, dry and properly tanked, and a flexible waterproof adhesive and grout used throughout the wet zone. A deep gloss brown is particularly handsome in a shower — the glaze reads almost like treacle under water and light.

Can Artworks Teapot Brown be used on a floor?

No. Artworks Teapot Brown is a glazed ceramic wall tile and is not rated for floors. The glaze would scratch and wear through in traffic, and a gloss surface offers little grip underfoot. Keep it on the walls and use a porcelain, quarry or natural stone tile on the floor — a red or buff quarry tile sits beautifully beneath this brown, and our team can help you pair them.

Will Artworks Teapot Brown match my existing tiles?

Teapot Brown is a deep, richly pigmented glaze and shade can move a little between production batches — more visibly than in a white, because the eye reads any shift in a dark tone as a patch. Order the whole job at once so it comes from a single batch, keep a few spares from it for repairs, and if you are matching to tiles already fixed, ask us for a sample to hold against them first.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Artworks Teapot Brown?

Fix with a white flexible tile adhesive and allow a 2-3mm joint. For grout, a mid to dark grey, a warm taupe or a soft biscuit all sit well against the brown. Avoid a brilliant white — on a glaze this dark it draws a stark white lattice across the wall and cheapens it. If you want the brick pattern to read clearly, go one or two shades lighter than the tile rather than jumping to white.

Is Artworks Teapot Brown in stock, and how quickly can it be delivered?

Teapot Brown is usually held in stock across the range. We deliver throughout the UK, and delivery is free on orders over £1,000; below that it is calculated at checkout. If your project is on a deadline, or you need a large quantity of one piece, call the showroom on 01344 620211 and we will confirm availability before you order.

How does Artworks Teapot Brown compare with the other Artworks colours?

It is the darkest colour in the range. Brilliant White is cool and optical, Vintage White the warmest and most aged, County White a soft creamy Victorian white, Ivory a neutral cream with a grey undertone, Palladian Beige a quiet warm stone and Ochre a deep golden yellow. Teapot Brown goes further still — a rich treacle brown with the depth of an old Rockingham teapot glaze. It is the one colour in the range that reads as dark rather than as a tint, and it wants good light or a deliberately snug room.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which Artworks pieces are available in Teapot Brown?

Eighteen pieces: the 152 x 152mm field tile, the 152 x 76mm half tile, a 228 x 75mm large brick, bevelled metro tiles in 150 x 75mm and 75 x 75mm, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Albert, Astragal, Dentil, Egg & Dart, Hogarth, Omega, Rope, Scroll and Sigma. Teapot Brown does not include handed corner pieces, an internal corner trim, wrapping pieces, rectangles or rounded edges; where those details are needed they are mitred or butted on site.
