A square tile is the most adaptable shape in tiling. With no long edge to line up, it sits comfortably in a grid, on the diagonal or as a chequerboard, and it works at every scale from mosaic to large floor tile. This collection covers ceramic and porcelain, natural marble and stone, mosaics, terrazzo and Victorian floor tiles, from brands including Original Style, Fired Earth and Ca'Pietra.

Square Tiles: Choosing the Size, Material and Finish

Size changes how a room feels. Small squares carry a lot of grout, which adds texture and pattern and lets a tile follow a curve or a change of level. Mid-sized squares are the natural home of pattern, such as a Victorian-style floor laid as a hallway runner or a panel framed by a border. Large squares cover open-plan floors with few joints and make a small room feel less busy.

Before you choose, check a few details on each product. Suitability comes first, because some squares are wall tiles only. For floors, look at the slip rating, especially in kitchens, bathrooms and entrances. Rectified tiles can take a narrow grout joint, while handmade-look and calibrated stone tiles need a wider one. Natural stone and marble often need sealing, so follow the specification on each product page.

Finally, work from the room rather than the tile alone. The same plain square reads calm in a grid and livelier on the diagonal, and a diagonal layout needs more cuts, so allow extra when ordering. Order samples of a shortlist and look at them in your own light.

Square Tile FAQs

What sizes do square tiles come in?
Our square tiles range from small 10×10cm and 15×15cm formats through to 60×60cm and larger, plus square mosaics on mesh sheets. Smaller squares suit splashbacks and feature areas; larger squares give a calm, seamless floor.

Can square tiles be used on both walls and floors?
Yes — the range includes wall-rated and floor-rated options across ceramic, porcelain and natural stone. Check the suitability on each product, or order a sample and our team can advise.

What layouts work best with square tiles?
Straight grid, diagonal (diamond) and stack-bond all work well. A grid feels classic and calm, while a diagonal set adds movement and can make a small room feel wider.

Do you offer samples and UK delivery?
Yes — free cut samples are available, you can visit our Ascot showroom, and we offer free UK delivery on orders over £1,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between herringbone, chevron and brick-bond layouts?

These are all ways of laying rectangular or brick-shaped tiles. Brick-bond (or offset) staggers each row by half a tile, like a brick wall, for a classic, forgiving finish. Herringbone sets rectangles at 90 degrees in an interlocking zig-zag, while chevron cuts the ends at an angle so the tiles meet in a continuous V. Each gives a different level of detail and movement — our team can show you examples.

Are shaped or patterned-layout tiles harder to lay?

Patterned layouts like herringbone, chevron and intricate shapes take more planning and more cuts than a straight grid, so they reward careful setting-out and, ideally, an experienced tiler. The result is well worth it — a feature floor or wall with real character. We're happy to help you estimate quantities, allowing a little extra for the additional cuts.

Can these tiles go on both walls and floors?

It depends on the individual tile rather than its shape — suitability for floors, walls and wet areas is set by the material, finish and slip rating, shown on each product page. Many shaped and brick tiles work beautifully in both settings; if you'd like to use one across walls and floor, just ask and we'll point you to the right options.

How do I set out a pattern so it looks balanced?

We recommend dry-laying a section first and working from a central line, so the pattern stays symmetrical and any cut tiles fall evenly at the edges rather than as awkward slivers. For herringbone and chevron in particular, getting the starting angle right is key. An experienced tiler will give you the cleanest, best-aligned finish.

How many tiles should I order for a patterned layout?

Measure your area, then add a little more than usual for wastage — around 10% for brick-bond and up to 15% for herringbone, chevron or diagonal designs, which involve more cuts. Ordering everything together from one batch keeps colour consistent. Our team is always happy to check your quantities before you order.

Can I order a sample before I commit?

Yes — shape, scale and finish are best judged in your own space and light. We offer free cut samples to collect from our Ascot showroom, or posted for a small postage charge, and you're very welcome to visit the showroom to see full tiles and talk through your layout with our team.

Square Tiles

Our square tiles span the full range from small mosaics to large-format floors, all sharing the clean, balanced symmetry of an equal-sided tile. A classic choice for walls and floors alike, square formats suit everything from period splashbacks to sleek, contemporary interiors.

A Format for Every Space

Smaller squares bring detail and grip — ideal for splashbacks, shower floors and patterned designs — while larger squares create a calm, open feel with fewer grout lines underfoot. With sizes from compact 10 x 10cm up to grand 80 x 80cm, there's a square tile for every room and style.

Walls, Floors and Wet Areas

Suitability for walls, floors and wet areas depends on the individual tile's material, finish and slip rating, confirmed on each product page. Whether you're tiling a feature wall or a whole floor, our team can help you choose the right square format and work out quantities.

Free Samples and Showroom Support

Colour, finish and scale are best seen in your own space. We offer free cut samples to collect from our Ascot showroom or posted for a small postage charge, and you're welcome to visit our Ascot showroom.
