Poppies Without the Wheat: Artworks Poppy & Wheatsheaf Border on County White

A 152 x 152mm decorated ceramic border carrying poppies alone, printed on the soft, creamy County White ground — from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

The Victorians decorated their washstands and fireplaces with naturalistic flowers, and the poppy was among the most enduring of them. This is the quieter of the two Poppy and Wheatsheaf borders — the ears of wheat are left out, so the pattern reads as a run of blooms rather than a full harvest scene.

That restraint is what makes it useful. Run at dado height, above a splashback or around a fireplace, it gives a plain County White wall a line of colour and period detail without committing the whole room to pattern. Matching corner tiles turn the run through an angle.

  • Order a Sample - Free cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or posted to your door for the cost of postage.
  • Dedicated Delivery - We arrange safe, secure delivery for your project, with free UK delivery on orders over £1,000.
  • Personalised Project Support - Our family-run team can help you calculate quantities: supplied individually, so you order exactly the number of pieces your run needs.

⚠ Installation & Care Tips

  • Adhesive & Grout: Fix with a white flexible tile adhesive — a grey adhesive can shadow through a pale ground — and grout in a soft off-white or warm putty tone so the joint does not cut across the pattern.
  • Layout: Set the decorated run out first and work the plain field tiles to it, so the pattern lands centrally and any cut falls in a corner rather than mid-motif. Measure each run in metres and divide by 0.152 for the piece count.
  • Cleaning: The glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull a decorated surface faster than a plain one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the two Poppy and Wheatsheaf borders?

One carries the ears of wheat alongside the poppies; the other has the poppies alone. The wheat version is the busier and more traditionally Victorian of the two; the version without it reads quieter and sits more easily in a contemporary room. They share the same County White ground and the same 152 x 152mm format, so they can be alternated along a single run if you want a rhythm to the border.

How are the decorated tiles supplied — individually or by the box?

Individually. They are packed five to a box, but you order the exact number of pieces your scheme needs rather than a whole box — which matters with decorated tiles, since most schemes want a precise count rather than a round one.

How do I work out how many border and corner tiles I need?

Measure each straight run in metres and divide by 0.152 to give the number of border tiles, then add one corner tile for every angle the border turns. Set the decorated run out first and work the plain field tiles to it, so the pattern lands centrally and any cut falls in a corner rather than mid-motif. Ring us with your measurements if you would like us to check the count.

What is the Poppy and Wheatsheaf design?

A nineteenth-century floral pattern — poppies and ears of wheat drawn in the naturalistic style the Victorians favoured for fireplace and washstand tiles. It is printed onto the same County White ceramic ground used across the plain Artworks range, so the decorated pieces sit against the field tiles without a shift in tone.

Will County White match across the different Artworks shapes and mouldings?

Every Artworks piece is finished in the same County White glaze, so field tiles, half tiles, mouldings, skirtings and wrapping pieces are designed to be used together. As with any glazed ceramic there can be slight variation between production batches, so we recommend ordering everything for a scheme at the same time.
