The 30 x 30cm square is the most practical size in tiling. It covers ground quickly, it can be cut with an ordinary tile cutter, one person can handle it, and it divides neatly into most British room dimensions. It is not fashionable in the way a 120cm slab is, which is precisely why it keeps being specified.

The range covers Fired Earth's Milan porcelain and Arcilla terracotta-effect, Palio honed limestone and Chequers Court marble.

Where it beats a large format

In an older house with an uneven floor, a 30cm tile follows the sub-floor with far less making-good than a large format. In a small or awkwardly shaped room — a utility, a cloakroom, a galley kitchen — it produces fewer awkward slivers at the edges. And it is considerably cheaper to fit.

Laying patterns it suits

A square this size takes a chequerboard beautifully, in two colours or in a stone and a marble. It also works brick-bonded, or laid on the diagonal to make a narrow room read wider — though the diagonal generates a great deal more cutting, so order more.

Limestone and marble want sealing

The honed limestone and marble in this range are natural stone: seal before grouting and again after, then periodically depending on use. Terracotta-effect porcelain gives a similar look with none of that, which is worth knowing if the room is a kitchen or a hallway.

Check the actual dimension

Not everything sold as 30 x 30 is exactly 300mm — tumbled and hand-finished tiles in particular vary. If you are setting out to a tight pattern or butting against an existing floor, check the stated size on the product page and allow for the joint.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I work out how many tiles I need?

Measure the area you're tiling in square metres (length x width), then add around 10% for cuts and wastage — a little more for diagonal layouts or rooms with lots of cuts. Tiles are usually sold by the square metre or by the box, so divide your total area by the coverage per box and round up to whole boxes. Our team is always happy to check your measurements and quantities before you order.

Is this tile size right for my room?

As a general guide, larger formats such as 60 x 60cm and above make a space feel more open and seamless with fewer grout lines, and suit medium-to-large floors, while smaller formats and mosaics give more grip and flexibility in compact areas, splashbacks and shower floors. There's no hard rule, though — it's about the look you want, and we're happy to advise for your specific space.

Can these tiles be used on both walls and floors?

Many can, but it depends on the individual tile rather than the size alone — a tile's suitability for floors, walls or wet areas is set by its material, finish and slip rating. Each product page confirms where a tile can be used; if you'd like to run one tile across both walls and floor, just ask and we'll point you to the right options.

What are the benefits of large-format tiles?

Large-format tiles create a calm, contemporary look with fewer grout joints, which makes a room feel bigger and is easier to keep clean. They work beautifully on floors and feature walls. They do need a flat, well-prepared substrate and are heavier to handle, so for the largest formats we'd recommend an experienced tiler using a back-buttering technique for full adhesion.

Should I order extra tiles for the future?

It's a sensible idea. Ordering a little extra from the same batch means you'll have matching tiles on hand for any future repairs or alterations, since colours and finishes can vary slightly between production runs. We'd suggest keeping a few spare tiles from your delivery, and our team can advise on the right amount for your project.

Can I order a sample before I commit?

Yes — colour, finish and scale are best judged in your own room and light. We offer free cut samples to collect from our Ascot showroom, or posted for a small postage charge, and you're very welcome to visit the showroom to see full tiles in person and talk your project through with our team.

30 x 30cm Tiles

Our 30 x 30cm tiles are a classic mid-sized square, a versatile and practical format that works across floors and walls. A traditional favourite for a balanced, even finish, this size suits everything from natural stone and mosaics-on-mesh to plain porcelain and patterned designs.

A Practical Mid-Size Square

At 30 x 30cm, this square strikes a comfortable balance — large enough to lay efficiently, yet easy to handle and well-proportioned for medium-sized rooms. It's a common size for natural stone, mosaic sheets and outdoor-style finishes, giving a neat, ordered grid.

Walls, Floors and Wet Areas

Suitability for walls, floors and wet areas depends on each tile's material, finish and slip rating, shown on the product page. Natural stone should be sealed, while porcelain needs no sealing and is ideal for busier areas — our team is happy to help you choose.

Free Samples and Showroom Support
