What a Square Edge Does to a Long Format

A 228 x 75mm brick with square edges and an 8mm body, glazed in a light mid-grey: the Westminster Grey Large Brick, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

This is the elongated format in the Artworks vocabulary — 228mm across the face by 75mm high, on a body 8mm thick. Its edges are square, so laid up a wall the faces meet almost plane to plane and each joint reads as a fine drawn line rather than as a shadowed channel. That is a different effect from a chamfered tile, and an equally deliberate one. Each brick covers 0.0171m², putting the geometric rate at 58.5 tiles to the square metre. Original Style box them in fifteens and quote 0.254m² per box, a separate supplier figure that allows for grouting.

Westminster Grey is a mid-grey with no cast to it, positioned by Original Style as a muted alternative to white or cream. In the long brick that neutrality does something useful. The stretched proportion is a modern one, and a plain grey lets it read as contemporary rather than as period pastiche, even though the range it belongs to is a Victorian one. Run it full height in a new bathroom and nothing about it insists on a date. Run it as a dado in an Edwardian hall and it behaves like the plain painted joinery grey that would have been there anyway.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Returns

To request a return, contact Hyperion within 14 days of delivery. For eligible online consumer cancellations, you have a further 14 days after telling us to send the goods back. Contact us for the correct return address; your statutory cancellation does not depend on our authorisation.

Additional supplier returns have their own eligibility rules, charges and exclusions. These do not override statutory cancellation rights or rights for faulty goods. See our refund policy and supplier return guidance before arranging a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use these tiles in a shower or wet room?

Yes. Artworks is rated for internal walls in both wet and dry areas, so a shower enclosure, a wet room wall or a splashback behind a basin all sit comfortably within its remit. The glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing.

The one limit to hold in mind is that this is a wall range only. It is not rated for floors, so a shower tray, a wet room floor or any surface underfoot will need a separate floor tile. Make sure the substrate is properly tanked before tiling begins in a fully wet area, and fix with a white flexible adhesive.

Can Westminster Grey be laid on a floor?

No. Artworks is a wall range and Westminster Grey is no exception. A gloss wall glaze carries no rating for foot traffic, so it should not go down on a floor, a stair tread or a threshold anywhere in the house.

Most projects want both, of course. Tell us what you are tiling and we will put forward a floor tile that sits properly with this glaze — ring 01344 620211, or bring your plans into the showroom at 67 High Street, Ascot and we will work through it with you.

Will the tiles still match if I order more later?

Glazed ceramic is fired in batches, and the tone can move very slightly from one firing to the next. On a mid-grey the shift is small, but it is visible where two batches meet partway across a wall.

The remedy is straightforward: work out the whole job, including every moulding and trim, and order it in one go so it all arrives from a single batch. Make a note of the batch number when the delivery lands, and put a spare box away somewhere dry. If a tile is ever chipped, that box is what lets the repair disappear.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Westminster Grey?

Fix with a white flexible tile adhesive. White matters on a light glaze — a darker adhesive bed can read through and deaden the finish.

Grout is the bigger decision. On a mid-grey it does not alter the colour of the tile at all; what it alters is whether the wall reads as a piece of tiling or as one continuous surface. A grout close in tone to the tile lets the whole thing settle into a single plane, which is usually the point of choosing this colour — the tiling stays calm and the paint above the dado carries the colour of the room. A brilliant white joint does the reverse: it draws every line and turns the wall into a visible grid, making the tiling itself the feature. That is a perfectly legitimate choice, but it is a different job, so make it deliberately rather than by default.

Whichever way you go, keep the grout a true grey. A warm beige or greige set against a neutral glaze tends to make the tile look dirty, and a grout with a blue cast pulls the wall towards a different colour altogether. Match the tone, or move one shade lighter or darker, but do not introduce a temperature the tile does not have.

Is Westminster Grey in stock, and how is it delivered?

Westminster Grey is usually held in stock right across the range, so most orders can be picked and despatched without waiting on a factory run. If a fitter is booked and you need a firm date, ring us and we will confirm quantities and timing before you commit to anything.

Delivery anywhere in the UK is free on orders over £1,000. You are equally welcome to collect in person from our showroom at 67 High Street, Ascot, where the range is on display and someone can talk the pieces through with you. Call 01344 620211 to arrange it.

How does Westminster Grey compare with the other Artworks greys?

Artworks runs to six greys and neutrals: Chancel Grey, Westminster Grey, London Stone, Charcoal Grey, Jet Black and Platinum. Westminster Grey is a true mid-grey with no cast in it, which is precisely why it takes any other colour beside it so easily. Original Style describe it as a muted alternative to white or cream, and place it a touch darker than Chancel Grey.

We would rather be honest than helpful-sounding here: a monitor or a phone renders these tones badly, and two of them that look identical on a screen can be plainly different once they are in your hand. So do not decide from a photograph. Order samples of the two or three you are weighing up and hold them against your paintwork in the room itself. Cut samples are free to collect from the Ascot showroom, or we can post them for the cost of postage.

Which Artworks pieces can I get in Westminster Grey?

We stock thirty-one pieces in this colour — the Field Tile, Half Tile, Large Brick and both bevelled metro formats; ten dado mouldings; the Skirting Tile and Plain Cornice; internal and external corner trims; the four wrapping pieces; both rounded edge tiles; and handed corner pieces for the Albert, the Victoria and the skirting.

Several of those are pieces Original Style list as made to order across the range generally — the rounded edges, the corner wrapping pieces, the internal corner and the handed corner mouldings. In Westminster Grey we carry them as stock, which means a dado with returns and a properly finished run of edges can be specified and delivered without a special order.

One piece to flag honestly: Original Style do make a Metro Bevelled Corner in this colour and we do not hold it. If your metro run turns an outside corner and you want that piece, ring 01344 620211 and we will look into sourcing it for you.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

How many Large Bricks are in a box?

Fifteen to the box. The Large Brick measures 228 x 75 x 8mm, and Original Style give the coverage of a box as 0.254m² — a supplier figure with a grout allowance already inside it.

Taken from the brick's own dimensions, a single piece is 0.0171m², so one square metre needs 58.5 bricks. That laying rate is the number to use when you are pricing up from a measured area, with your wastage added on top before you count boxes.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Use a white flexible adhesive. With square edges the grout line is the only thing dividing one face from the next, so its tone sets the whole reading. Keep it within a shade of the tile and the long bricks knit into one continuous grey surface. Choose brilliant white instead and the horizontals come forward as a strongly drawn grid — no fault in that, but it is the opposite of a quiet wall and worth deciding on purpose. Whatever tone you land on, keep it a true grey: warmth in the grout turns a neutral tile grubby, and blue in the joint pulls the whole panel away from the colour you chose.
  • Layout: A running bond with a half-brick offset is the natural setting-out, and at 228mm long the courses cover ground quickly. Begin from a full brick on the dominant sightline and keep the offset consistent, because with a format this elongated a wandering bond shows up from across the room. Comb the adhesive bed evenly so the faces sit flush.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze wants no sealant. Warm water, mild detergent, a soft cloth. Nothing abrasive and nothing acidic — limescale removers in particular will take the lustre off the face, and it does not come back.
