Description
A Row of Small Square Teeth Above the Tiling
Fifty millimetres deep, faced with a repeating row of small square blocks and glazed in a near-black bottle green: the Artworks Victorian Green Dentil Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.
Dentils take their name from the Latin for teeth, and they are the row of small projecting blocks that sits beneath the corona of a classical cornice. Borrowed from stone into plasterwork and joinery, then into tile, they give a run of wall something no plain profile can: rhythm. A fixed, countable beat along the top of the tiling, at 152 x 50mm scaled so that it still reads clearly from the other side of a room.
This colour turns that rhythm into a row of shadows. Each gap between the blocks falls away to what looks like black in a glaze this deep, while the square faces hold the light, so from a few feet back you see an alternating beat of bright and dark rather than a band of green. It belongs in the rooms this colour was made for — a study, a small library, a cloakroom lit by a single warm fitting — and it works hardest immediately above a run of field tiles that would otherwise simply stop.

Installation & care

- Adhesive & Grout: Use a white flexible adhesive, then grout in a tone that sits close to the tile — charcoal, a deep grey or a dark green-grey. Rule out brilliant white first: it is the sharpest contrast this range can produce and it will cut a bright grid straight through the dentil beat. A mid grey is the other trap, neither near enough to recede nor dark enough to look chosen. Work the grout out of the gaps between the blocks before it sets, and sponge the gloss face patiently, because haze is much more visible on a deep glaze.
- Layout: Dentils want to agree with whatever runs below them, so set the moulding out from the same starting point as the field tiling and let the joints stack rather than wander. A dentil joint landing mid-block on the course beneath is the one thing that gives the run away.
- Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
