Description
A Measured Rhythm Beneath the Cornice
Small square blocks in ordered succession, worked in gloss ceramic at 152 x 50mm — this is the Artworks Royal Blue Dentil Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.
Dentils are the toothed course that classical architecture sets beneath a cornice, and joiners and plasterers have borrowed them ever since, for the measured interest they give a horizontal at very little projection. Each 152mm piece carries the repeat at a scale suited to a room rather than a façade, and the blocks continue across the joints, so a run of any length reads as a single course rather than a series of tiles.
In a deep indigo gloss the effect is subtler than it would be in a light colour. Every channel between one tooth and the next runs to a stronger, deeper blue as the surface turns inward and the glaze gathers there, while the exposed face of each block holds its shine, so the pattern is carried in tone rather than in a drawn edge. That makes it a good thing to have in a drawing room, on a chimney breast, or in a cloakroom meant to be seen after dark, where the light is low and a carved line has to work through depth of colour.

Installation & care

- Adhesive & Grout: Use a white flexible adhesive, and choose a grout close to the tile in tone — a deep grey or a charcoal both work, and so does a blue-grey. Anything brilliant white will trace a bright edge around every tooth in the repeat, and the rhythm of the carving is lost to the joints. A mid grey fails from the other direction: not near enough to the blue to disappear, not dark enough to look intentional, and the toothed course loses its definition. Deep gloss shows haze, so wipe back thoroughly and clear grout out of the channels between the dentils before it firms.
- Layout: Dentil sits naturally directly beneath a deeper capping piece, where the toothed course becomes the lower member of a two-part cornice; it is equally at home on its own along the top edge of a splashback. Dry-lay the run before fixing so the blocks meet cleanly at every joint and the spacing stays even from end to end.
- Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
