Description
Small Blocks, Regular Shadows
Small square blocks in ordered succession, 152 x 50mm in glazed ceramic, the colour a warm blue with green in it — the Artworks Baroque Blue Dentil Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.
Dentils are the row of small square blocks, evenly spaced with a gap between each one, that classical cornices carry along their underside; the word comes from the Latin for tooth. Modelled 50mm deep, this is a modest and well-mannered version, meant to add articulation to the top of a wall without claiming much height for itself. Each length measures 152mm, so 6.6 pieces fill a linear metre. A box of four covers 0.6 linear metres.
What a dentil course really does is manufacture shadow: a regular beat of small dark gaps that reads clearly from across a room even when the colour itself is quiet. Gloss on the square face of each block sends the light straight back at you, while the gap beside it returns none at all; it is that flat alternation, rather than any soft gradation, that makes a dentil course read as pattern before it reads as colour. It suits a bathroom or a kitchen where the scheme wants some order along its top edge, and it works as a band partway up a wall just as well as at the head of one. Copper and brass in the room pick up the warmth sitting on the block faces.

- Adhesive & Grout: Bed it on white flexible adhesive. Warm grout — a soft putty, a greige, a warm mid-grey — keeps the colour where it belongs, whereas a cool or blue-toned grey works against it, leaving the blue flatter and a good deal further from the tone you picked out. Brilliant white is best left alone as well: on a piece made of small repeated shapes, a joint that bright confuses the beat of the blocks with the beat of the jointing. Brush grout out of the gaps between the blocks before it hardens, and deal with haze early, because gloss shows it.
- Layout: The repeat is the thing to protect: dry-lay the run and adjust the starting point so the gap between blocks stays even where two pieces meet. Where a length must be cut, take it out of the least visible end of the wall and keep whole pieces in the sight line.
- Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
