Product story
The Dentil Course, Borrowed From the Cornice
A 152 x 50mm run of evenly spaced square blocks, glazed in a confident mid green with real depth: the Artworks Pavilion Green Dentil Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.
A dentil course is one of the oldest devices in classical architecture: a rank of small square blocks set at regular intervals beneath a cornice, cut to throw a steady rhythm of shadow along the top of a wall. This is that detail reduced to a single tiled course, 50mm deep and 152mm long, with the block spacing running on continuously from one piece to the next. It is ornament with a clear job to do — giving a run of tiling a defined top edge that reads as architecture rather than as decoration added afterwards.
Set it as the crowning course of a half-height dado, directly beneath a plain cornice as part of a built-up section, or along the head of a shower recess where a wall of green needs closing. The saturated glaze transforms the relief: it gathers thickly in the channels between the blocks and darkens there almost to a racing green, while the crown of every block stays bright and glossy. That is strong light and dark rather than a soft shadow, and it is why a dentil course in this colour still registers clearly from the far side of a room.

Installation & care
Installation & care
- Adhesive & Grout: White flexible adhesive. Then grout deeper than instinct suggests — a mid grey, or a green-grey pitched close to the depth of the tile itself. Brilliant white is the error to avoid: against a saturated green the contrast is severe, printing a hard grid over the wall and pushing the room towards a municipal swimming baths. Cream and ivory fare no better, turning yellow beside this green and simply reading as dirt. Keep grout out of the channels between the blocks and sponge the relief clean well before it sets.
- Layout: Set the dentil course out from the centre of the wall and work outwards, so the block rhythm lands evenly at both ends rather than dying into a part piece in a corner. Fix to a struck level line rather than to the top of the tile course beneath, which may not be perfectly true.
- Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
Samples
Tone, glaze and veining can read differently in your own light. Cut samples are free; sample postage is £4.99 (£8 for Original Style) and is refunded on tile orders over £50 using the code emailed with your sample order. Use the sample option in the buying panel, or call our Ascot team on 01344 620211 for help comparing colour, finish and quantities.
Delivery
In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.
Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.
When your order arrives
Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.
Returns
Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.
