Product story

Twisted Cord, Modelled in Gloss Green

A continuous twisted-cord relief measuring 152 x 40mm, glazed in a saturated mid green: the Artworks Pavilion Green Rope Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

Rope moulding has been carved into English buildings since the Norman doorway, and it returned in force in the Victorian hallway, the fireplace surround and the tiled porch. Here the cord is modelled the full 152mm length of each piece and picked up again by the next, so a long run reads as one unbroken twist rather than a series of separate tiles. It is a border with texture in it: where a plain moulding gives a change of plane, this gives a change of surface as well.

That suits it to the places where a line wants a little weight — framing a fireplace, closing the top of a splashback, edging a shower recess, or dividing two heights of tiling on a long wall. In this green the modelling turns emphatic. The glaze runs thick into the hollow of every twist and darkens there almost to a racing green, while the raised crown of the cord holds a bright gloss, so the piece reads as strong alternating light and dark rather than a faint ripple of shadow. It is a far more forceful effect than the same moulding produces in any pale colour.

Installation & care

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Use a white flexible adhesive. For grout, go a shade or two deeper than feels natural — a mid grey, or a soft green-grey close to the tile in depth. Brilliant white is the one to rule out: on a green this saturated the contrast is severe and the joints end up governing the wall. Cream and ivory turn yellow against the colour and look unclean. Work the grout carefully and lift it out of the hollow of the twist with a damp sponge before it begins to go off.
  • Layout: Keep the direction of the twist running the same way from piece to piece and check the whole length before the adhesive grabs; one reversed piece is glaringly obvious once the wall is grouted. Where a run has to turn, plan the last piece so the cord arrives at the corner cleanly rather than mid-twist.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
Samples

Tone, glaze and veining can read differently in your own light. Cut samples are free; sample postage is £4.99 (£8 for Original Style) and is refunded on tile orders over £50 using the code emailed with your sample order. Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Returns

Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Artworks Pavilion Green tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. Artworks is specified for both wet and dry wall areas, so Pavilion Green is at home in a shower enclosure, a wet room or around a bath. The background must be sound, dry and properly tanked, with a flexible waterproof adhesive and grout throughout the wet zone. A saturated green is at its most dramatic wet — under running water the glaze deepens towards bottle green and the wall reads several shades darker than it does dry.

Can I use Artworks Pavilion Green on the floor?

No. Artworks is a wall tile range only. The glaze is not rated for foot traffic and would scratch and dull quickly underfoot, and a gloss surface of this kind is slippery when wet. A strong green wall wants a floor that holds its own without competing — a black and white geometric, a plain black, or a warm terracotta quarry all work well beneath it. Call 01344 620211 and we will suggest something.

Will every Pavilion Green tile be exactly the same shade?

There is slight variation between production batches. On a saturated colour this shows differently from a pale one: rather than a visible half-shade shift, you may see a subtle difference in depth between one batch and another, which reads as patchiness across a large expanse. Order the whole quantity for a room at once, including your wastage allowance, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out. If you are adding to existing tiling, send us a photograph and we will give you an honest view.

What adhesive and grout colour should I use with Pavilion Green?

White flexible adhesive. For grout, go deeper than instinct suggests: a mid grey or a soft green-grey, closer in depth to the tile than to the joint you might choose on a pale colour. Two to avoid. Brilliant white is the classic mistake on a strong green — the contrast is severe, it draws a hard grid over the wall and pushes the whole thing towards a sports hall or a swimming baths. And a cream or ivory grout turns yellow against this green and simply looks dirty. Close in tone, cool rather than warm.

Is Pavilion Green in stock, and how quickly can it be delivered?

Pavilion Green is usually held in stock across the range, field and half tiles and the full set of mouldings alike. We will confirm availability and a delivery date for your exact quantity when you order, and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000. If a piece is temporarily out we will tell you the lead time before you commit rather than after. Call 01344 620211 or visit us at 67 High Street, Ascot.

How does Pavilion Green compare with the other Artworks greens?

There are three, and only one of them is a strong colour. Pavilion Green is the saturated one — a confident mid green with real depth, the colour of painted outdoor joinery rather than a tint. Palm Green is a soft warm leaf green and Jade Breeze a pale cool sage; both are gentle enough to tile a whole room in, where Pavilion Green is a colour you make a decision about. If you want green as a background, choose one of the other two. If you want green to be the point of the room, this is the one. Order samples of all three and see them together.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Artworks Pavilion Green?

Fifteen pieces: the 152 x 152mm field tile, the 152 x 76mm half tile, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Pavilion Green does not include a large brick tile, bevelled metro tiles, relief-moulded decorative tiles, handed corner pieces, an internal corner trim, wrapping pieces or rounded-edge tiles. Everything is sold by the box.

What does the Pavilion Green Rope Moulding actually look like on a wall?

It reads as a continuous twisted cord running along the wall, the pieces butting end to end so the twist carries on unbroken. On a green this strong the modelling is emphatic: the glaze runs thick in the twist and darkens there almost to a racing green, while the crowns of the cord stay bright and glossy, so the spiral reads sharply from right across a room. Of all the classical borders it is the one that most obviously rewards a saturated colour.
