Description
A Twist of Claret Along the Edge
A 152 x 40mm ceramic border moulding modelled as a continuous twisted rope, glazed in deep claret: the Artworks Burgundy Rope Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.
Rope is the friendliest of the classical borders — a spiralling cable that runs on from piece to piece, so a length of it reads as one unbroken twist rather than a series of tiles. It has been used to frame panels, fireplaces and splashbacks for well over a century because it does something no straight trim can: it gives an edge movement, and draws the eye around a shape instead of stopping it.
Use it to frame a splashback behind a range, to outline a panel of field tiles, or as a border above a skirting run in a pantry or a bar. The claret does something specific to a spiral. The glaze slides off the high point of each turn and gathers in the groove winding between them, so that groove runs almost black cherry while the top of the cable stays bright and wet-looking — the twist gains a genuine light side and dark side, and visibly turns as it travels. On a white tile the same rope looks like a shallow ripple; here it looks carved.

Installation & care
Installation & care
- Adhesive & Grout: White flexible adhesive; grout in a mid grey or warm putty a shade lighter than the tile rather than brilliant white, which scores a hard pale line across a deep red and drains it. Sponge the grout out of the spiral groove while it is still soft — filled, the rope stops reading as rope.
- Layout: The spiral has a direction: lay the run out dry and keep every piece the same way up, or the twist will reverse halfway along. Mitres at the corners of a framed panel keep the cable running continuously.
- Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
