The Simplest Bead: Artworks Palladian Beige Astragal Moulding

A fine 152 x 21mm ceramic moulding with a convex bead profile in a warm stone beige — the Artworks Palladian Beige Astragal Moulding, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

An astragal is a plain half-round bead, the quietest of all classical mouldings. At just 21mm wide it draws a single soft line across a wall — enough to mark a change of material or colour, never enough to compete with it.

It is the piece to reach for when a scheme wants punctuation rather than ornament: above a skirting, beneath a cornice, or as the join between two tile colours.

Installation & care

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Fix with a white flexible tile adhesive and grout in a warm sand or putty tone rather than a brilliant white, which would fight the warmth of the glaze.
  • Layout: Set the moulding out first and work the field tiles to it, so the line runs true and any cuts fall out of eyeline. Measure the run in linear metres and allow a little extra for corners.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What is an astragal moulding?

An astragal is a small convex bead moulding, traditionally used to separate one architectural element from another. At just 21mm deep this is among the finest profiles in the Artworks range — a delicate raised bead rather than a statement band.

Where would I use such a slim moulding?

As a divider between two colours or formats of tile, as a fine edge above a skirting, or stacked with a deeper profile to build up a layered moulding. It is also the discreet choice for capping a half-height wall in a small cloakroom, where a deep dado would overwhelm the space.

Will Palladian Beige match across the different Artworks shapes and mouldings?

Every Artworks piece is finished in the same Palladian Beige glaze, so field tiles, half tiles, mouldings and the skirting are designed to be used together. As with any glazed ceramic there can be slight variation between production batches, and a warm tone shows that variation a little more readily than a white, so we recommend ordering everything for a scheme at the same time.

Can Artworks Brilliant White tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. Artworks is specified for both wet and dry wall areas, so it is at home in a shower enclosure, a wet room or around a bath. The background must be sound, dry and properly tanked, and a flexible waterproof adhesive and grout should be used throughout the wet zone.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.
