Structural Elegance: Chepstow Planed Grey Oak

Experience the strength of a structural floor without compromising on style with Chepstow Planed Grey Oak—a superior 21mm engineered plank that blends robust durability with contemporary ashen tones.

Chepstow is the heavyweight champion of the Woodpecker collection. At 21mm thick with a substantial 6mm real oak wear layer, this floor is designed to last generations. Unlike thinner engineered boards, Chepstow is load-bearing and can be installed directly over joists, making it perfect for renovation projects. The "Planed Grey" finish offers a modern twist on traditional oak; the boards are sanded smooth but retain subtle horizontal "chatter" marks from the planing machine, creating an authentic, handcrafted feel. A wash of contemporary grey stain cools the natural oak, resulting in a sophisticated "greige" palette that is finished with five coats of durable Hardwax Oil.

⚠️ Professional Installation Tips

  • Structural Fitting: Unlike thinner floors, Chepstow 21mm can be secret nailed directly to floor joists (at 400mm centres) as a load-bearing floor, or floated over an underlay.
  • Underfloor Heating: Compatible with UFH. However, for efficient heat transfer with this 21mm thick board, a full surface bond (glue-down) installation is highly recommended over the UFH screed.
  • Acclimatisation: Essential for all natural wood. Store packs in the room of installation for 3-4 days prior to fitting to allow the timber to adjust.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What is a "Planed" finish?

A planed finish means the board has been smoothed down, but not to a completely flat, "sanded" perfection. The planing process leaves subtle, rhythmic chatter marks across the surface. These are visible when the light hits the floor, adding a layer of authentic craftsmanship and texture that sets it apart from standard flat boards.

Can I lay this directly onto joists?

Yes! This is a major benefit of the Chepstow range. Because it is 21mm thick, it is classified as a load-bearing board. You can secret nail it directly to timber joists (spaced at 400mm centres), removing the need for a subfloor layer like plywood or chipboard. This creates a traditional solid feel underfoot.

What is the difference between Chepstow and Goodrich?

Chepstow is a plank format and is significantly thicker (21mm vs 15mm), designed for structural use or maximum longevity. Goodrich is a parquet (herringbone) format and is 15mm thick. Both use high-quality European oak, but Chepstow offers a thicker wear layer (6mm).

How do I maintain the Oiled finish?

Hardwax Oil penetrates the wood to protect it. To clean, use a specialist wood floor soap (like Woodpecker's Cleaning Liquid for Oiled Floors) which cleans and nourishes the oil simultaneously. Avoid harsh detergents. The beauty of oil is that scratches can be sanded and re-oiled locally without refinishing the whole room.
