Misty Elegance: Chepstow Shale Oak

Bring the serenity of coastal cliffs and morning mist into your home with Chepstow Shale Oak—a superior 21mm engineered plank that blends structural robustness with contemporary, cool grey tones.

Inspired by mist cascading across rock faces, Chepstow Shale Oak features a beautiful palette of soft greys and cool tonal variations that add vitality and depth to any room. Unlike standard grey floors, the natural "Rustic" grade ensures that the timber's character still shines through, with visible knots and grain patterns preventing the colour from looking flat. At 21mm thick with a substantial 6mm wear layer, this structural board is designed to last a lifetime. Finished with durable Hardwax Oil, the surface is protected while retaining an organic, satin feel that is a joy to walk on barefoot.

Installation & care

⚠️ Professional Installation Tips

  • Structural Fitting: Chepstow 21mm can be secret nailed directly to floor joists (at 400mm centres) as a load-bearing floor, or floated over an underlay.
  • Underfloor Heating: Compatible with UFH. However, for efficient heat transfer with this 21mm thick board, a full surface bond (glue-down) installation is highly recommended over the UFH screed.
  • Maintenance: This floor is Oiled. You should use a liquid wax cleaner (like Woodpecker One Coat Soap) to clean and nourish the floor. Do not use standard detergents.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Returns

Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What colour is "Shale Oak"?

Shale Oak is a contemporary grey floor, but it avoids looking cold or industrial. The grey tones are soft and "misty," inspired by coastal rocks. You will see variations from light silver to deeper slate grey, with the natural warmth of the oak wood occasionally peeking through to keep the room feeling inviting.

Is it a structural floor?

Yes. The defining feature of the Chepstow range is its 21mm thickness. This means it is strong enough to be used as a structural subfloor. You can nail it directly to timber joists (spaced at 400mm centres), which is perfect for renovations where you want to replace old pine floorboards with premium oak.

What is Hardwax Oil?

Hardwax Oil is a natural finish that penetrates deep into the wood's pores rather than sitting on top like a plastic film (lacquer). This protects the wood from within while allowing it to breathe. The result is a natural, matte surface that is easy to spot-repair if scratched.

How long will it last?

With a massive 6mm wear layer of real oak, Chepstow floors are built for longevity. This top layer is thick enough to be sanded down and refinished multiple times over the decades, making it a true investment for the future of your home.
