Deep Heritage: Chepstow Antique Oak

Bring the grandeur of a stately home to your interior with Chepstow Antique Oak—a superior 21mm engineered plank that marries structural power with rich, dark sophistication.

Chepstow Antique Oak is a floor with presence. The timber is treated with a dark stain that enhances the oak's natural features, turning the grain patterns into deep, chocolate-brown ribbons of character. The "Planed" finish means the surface is smooth but retaining subtle texture, while the Hardwax Oil finish adds a satin sheen that enriches the warming tones. At 21mm thick with a substantial 6mm wear layer, this floor is a heavy-duty, load-bearing solution that offers the look and feel of an ancient solid oak floor with the stability of modern engineering.

⚠️ Professional Installation Tips

  • Structural Fitting: Chepstow 21mm can be secret nailed directly to floor joists (at 400mm centres) as a load-bearing floor, or floated over an underlay.
  • Underfloor Heating: Compatible with UFH. However, for efficient heat transfer with this 21mm thick board, a full surface bond (glue-down) installation is highly recommended over the UFH screed.
  • Maintenance: This floor is Oiled. You should use a liquid wax cleaner (like Woodpecker One Coat Soap) to clean and nourish the floor. Do not use standard detergents.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this "Antique"?

The "Antique" name refers to the rich, dark stain applied to the oak. It mimics the deep, aged patina found in centuries-old manor houses, where the wood has naturally darkened over time. This gives you the look of a heritage floor from day one.

Is it a structural floor?

Yes. The defining feature of the Chepstow range is its 21mm thickness. This means it is strong enough to be used as a structural subfloor. You can nail it directly to timber joists (spaced at 400mm centres), which is perfect for renovations where you want to replace old pine floorboards with premium oak.

Does the dark colour show scratches?

Dark floors can show light scratches (which reveal the lighter oak underneath) more than pale floors. However, because this floor is Hardwax Oiled, you can easily repair these scratches. Simply applying a small amount of maintenance oil to the scratch will darken the wood back down and blend it in—something you can't do with a lacquered floor.

How long will it last?

With a massive 6mm wear layer of real oak, Chepstow floors are built for longevity. This top layer is thick enough to be sanded down and refinished multiple times over the decades, making it a true lifetime investment.

Why buy from Hyperion Tiles?

We are a family-run business with deep technical expertise. We don't just sell flooring; we can guide you on structural installations, UFH systems, and the correct maintenance oil to use, ensuring your investment looks beautiful for years to come.
