Mogao Glass and Stone Mosaic Wall Tile

A monochrome range — white and pale greys through mid greys to black, with silvered and lightly glittered glass chips set among the stone. Because the palette is neutral it behaves as a textured grey rather than as a colour, which is what makes it easy to use: it sits happily against white sanitaryware, chrome or brushed nickel, pale marble worktops and dark timber alike. It is at its best where it catches light from the side, which lifts the metallic chips out of the greys.

By the sheet. Each mesh-backed sheet is 300 x 300mm and covers 0.09 square metres, so a square metre takes just over eleven sheets — order twelve and you have a sensible allowance for cuts. Sheets come six to a box, which is 0.54 square metres, but you buy them individually rather than by the box, so there is no need to round up to a full box you do not want. A WHITE flexible adhesive, and this genuinely matters. Glass is translucent, so whatever sits behind it is part of the finished colour — bed these sheets on a grey adhesive and the whole wall goes muddy and dull, and there is no fixing it afterwards. Use a white rapid-set or flexible adhesive, comb it out evenly, and press each sheet home so there are no voids showing through the glass. In a wet area the adhesive and grout must also be rated for it.

Yes — and this is the step people miss on a mixed mosaic. The glass is non-porous and needs nothing, but the stone chips beside it are porous and will drink grout pigment straight into the surface if they are not sealed first. Apply an impregnating stone sealer to the face of the sheets, let it cure, then grout, then seal once more after the grout has fully dried. Skip it on a dark grout and the stone can be permanently stained on the first pass.

Use an unsanded grout. The joints on a mosaic this size are narrow, and a sanded grout dragged across glass will leave fine scratches that dull the surface permanently. On colour, stay mid-tone and quiet — a soft grey or a warm stone shade usually disappears and lets the mosaic read as one surface. A brilliant white draws a hard net over hundreds of joints, and a very dark grout both dominates the sheet and raises the stakes if the stone has not been sealed properly.

Where a cut falls between chips, simply cut the mesh with a sharp knife and remove whole pieces — most of a well set-out job needs nothing more. Where a chip itself has to be cut, use a wet saw with a glass or continuous-rim diamond blade, slowly, so the glass does not chip on the exit edge; tile nippers work on the stone but will shatter glass. Set out from a centre line so cuts land at the ends of a run, and trim any loose mesh at external edges before fixing.

It is specified for interior walls, which includes shower walls, wet rooms, splashbacks and the wall behind a bath, provided the background is properly tanked and the adhesive and grout are rated for wet areas. It is a wall product only — do not lay it on a floor, including a shower tray. Glass is not rated for foot traffic and would scratch and dull quickly, and the surface is slippery underfoot when wet.
