The work in a wet area goes on behind the tile rather than on it: the background wants to be flat, sound and properly tanked before a single piece is fixed, and the joints kept in good repair afterwards. What the colourway is not rated for is a floor — Artworks is a wall glaze from end to end.

No. Artworks is a wall range and a gloss wall glaze is not made to be walked on; underfoot it scuffs and loses its shine. That applies to every one of the fifteen shapes we stock in Charcoal Grey, from the field tile down to the 12mm Omega bead.

A little, as with any glazed ceramic. This glaze is semi-opaque by design, so some difference from piece to piece is part of what you are buying — it is what makes a moulded profile legible rather than flat. Batch-to-batch difference is a separate thing, and it is slight, but two batches on one wall can still read apart once light crosses them.

Order the whole job at once and ask us to confirm the batch. Keep a spare box from it, too: a replacement drawn from the same batch will vanish into the wall in a way that one ordered three years later may not.

Fix with a white flexible adhesive. The grout is the interesting decision here, because on this colourway it is a contrast choice rather than a blending one. A dark grout does the opposite. Matched close to the tile it fuses the whole wall into a single mass, and the mouldings, cornice and skirting you chose for their relief stop registering at all. If white feels too stark for the room, a pale silver-grey keeps most of the separation while softening the grid — but do not take the joint down to the tone of the tile.

Charcoal Grey is the dark one, and its distinguishing property is that it is not solid. Original Style describe it as a touch lighter than their Jet Black and, more to the point, less opaque — so the glaze sits thinner over the crown of a moulding and pools in the hollows, giving a single length of Egg & Dart or Dentil a real range of tone. On a flat field tile that shows as depth; on relief it is the whole argument for the colour.

Artworks runs to six greys and neutrals: Chancel Grey, Westminster Grey, London Stone, Charcoal Grey, Jet Black and Platinum. Westminster Grey is the neutral, London Stone the warm one, and Charcoal Grey is where the range goes dark without going flat. Dark glazes are the hardest of all to judge on a screen, where photography and monitor calibration do most of the talking. Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.
