History Reimagined: Berkeley Priory Oak

Step back in time with Berkeley Priory Oak—an engineered wood floor that captures the intense character and romance of historic reclaimed timber.

As part of the Berkeley "Extra Rustic" collection, Priory Oak is one of the most distinctive and dramatic floors in the Woodpecker range. It creates the illusion of a floor that has survived centuries, featuring authentic scorch marks and rich dark red undertones that glow with warmth. Each plank is meticulously hand-scraped to produce an undulating surface, while dark filler in the knots and splits emphasizes its aged, lived-in aesthetic.

⚠️ Installation & Care Tips

  • Installation Method: This T&G board allows for versatile installation: float over underlay (gluing joints), secret nail to joists/plywood, or fully stick down to the subfloor.
  • Underfloor Heating: Perfectly suitable for UFH systems. We strictly recommend the glue-down method when using UFH to ensure the best heat transfer and stability.
  • Oiled Finish Care: The oil finish brings out the richness of the scorch marks. Maintain this depth of colour by using Woodpecker's specific oiled floor cleaning products.
  • Rustic Character: This is an "Extra Rustic" floor. Expect large knots, open splits, and dark filler. The scorch marks are a deliberate design feature intended to mimic reclaimed timber.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What makes "Priory Oak" different from other Berkeley floors?

Priory Oak is distinct due to its deep red/brown undertones and the presence of deliberate scorch marks. While "Rugged Oak" is a classic brown and "Cottage Oak" is golden, Priory Oak mimics timber salvaged from a fire or historic building, offering a richer, darker aesthetic.

Is the surface smooth?

No, it is highly textured. The surface is hand-scraped, creating a wavy, undulating feel underfoot. This enhances the rustic look and makes the floor feel like it has been worn down over generations.

What is the wear layer?

The floor features a robust 4mm solid oak wear layer bonded to a stable engineered core. This ensures the floor has the visual appeal and longevity of solid wood but with better resistance to humidity changes.

Can I sand this floor?

Yes, the 4mm wear layer allows for sanding. However, sanding would remove the hand-scraped texture and the surface colour/scorch marks, essentially resetting the floor to a flat, raw oak appearance.

Is it suitable for pets?

Yes. The "Extra Rustic" and distressed nature of Priory Oak makes it incredibly forgiving. Scratches from claws or toys tend to blend into the existing character of the wood rather than standing out as damage.
