Katie’s Bathroom Vision: From Blank Canvas to Bold Statement
Katie and her family are loving their new bathroom.
Katie’s bathroom began as a generous but plain and outdated space, carpeted with tired fixtures and fittings. She explains: “The room was already the main bathroom but it featured an outdated shower cubicle with basic white glossy tiles and was carpeted, so it was very much in need of an update!”
The right bathroom tiles became the anchor. Katie chose our Fired Earth Bert & May Split Shift Old Iron Porcelain to flow from the floor into the shower enclosure for maximum impact. She says: “We knew we wanted something bold and dramatic in the bathroom as it is a large space. When we found these tiles, we knew they were the ones!”
Choosing the Star of the Show: Black & White Geometric Bathroom Tiles
Katie wanted porcelain bathroom tiles that felt bold, not repetitive. This monochrome pattern mixes semi-circles, triangles and rectangles, so the shapes create movement across the floor and walls. Porcelain bathroom tiles are highly water-resistant, ultra-durable, and low-maintenance, making them ideal for high-moisture areas like shower areas, bathroom floors and around basins.
Letting the Tiles Lead: Designing the Rest of the Bathroom Around the Pattern
Katie had already bought the apple green radiator as a secondary statement piece for the bathroom, which simply adds to the drama.
Once the tiles were chosen, the bathroom design fell into place. The shower glass frames the pattern rather than hiding it. The plain white bath, basin and WC keep the room fresh, while matt black fittings echo the tiles.
Floor Meets Wall: Creating a Seamless Tile Envelope
Katie always planned to continue the same bathroom tiles from the bathroom floor into the shower area and selected walls to create a wraparound effect behind the glass with big impact.
Using the same tiles for both floors and walls creates a seamless look, but it’s important to ensure that the floor tiles are strong enough to handle weight and wear. These are made from porcelain, which makes them ideal. Porcelain tiles have a low water absorption rate of below 0.5%, making them particularly suitable for moisture-prone bathroom environments.
Working with Professionals: Tile Installation Done Right
“I personally love the view when you look into the wavy mirror and you have a mixture of floor and wall tiles, a pop of yellow, the radiator, plants and bath. It literally encompasses all the elements of the bathroom in one shot.” — Katie
With a busy family life and toddler at home, Katie chose professionals. CDE Ceramic Tiling levelled, tiled and fitted the suite; Katie then completed the look by painting the room and adding carefully picked accessories. Her brief was simple: make the layout as random as possible. She explains: “We asked the tilers (who were fantastic) to make them as random as possible! They said once they had got the first few down, it became easier…our tilers were incredibly skilful and they didn’t appear to have any issues when installing them.”
Colour Blocking & Contrast: Balancing a Busy Floor
It took a while before Katie found the right shade of yellow paint which contrasts beautifully with the striking green radiator, black matt fixtures and sleek, white tub.
The diagonal yellow wall was inspired by the sloping ceiling, drawing the eye upward. Katie reveals: “The angle of the ceiling inspired the diagonal as it encourages your eye up rather than fixating on the lower edge of the roof. It took a long time to find a yellow that we felt was bright enough and we went through numerous colour sample sheets till we found the perfect pairing of yellow and white.”
The apple green radiator became a secondary statement. The yellow, green and monochrome palette keeps the space joyful, while the single patterned surface prevents chaos. Katie adds: “Throughout our home we have used bold colour blocking, so it has become our signature style.”
Fixtures & Fittings: Grounding the Space with Matt Black
Our Fired Earth Bert & May Split Shift Old Iron Porcelain tiles look striking in the shower area.
Katie considered brass, but the graphic tiles called for black. The bath filler, shower head, screen and taps all connect back to the floor tiles and wall tiles. Katie admits: “We had toyed with the idea of brass but once we picked the tiles, we knew we needed the black.” Design tip: echo one tile colour in your fittings so modern designs feel intentional, not busy.
Playing with Shape: Wavy Mirror vs Straight Arch
Katie polled her Instagram followers on whether to choose a wavy or straight-edged mirror. She says: “Two-thirds voted for the latter but, once we had done a mock-up, we knew the basic arch just didn’t look right. So we took a risk, went wavy and have never looked back!” Its curves soften the hard geometry and reflect light, yellow, green, plants and tiles in one playful view.
Creating a Bathroom Jungle: Plants, Texture & “The Other Bits”
Katie’s plants look the picture of health, adding biophilic principles to this beautiful, bright bathroom.
Bird of Paradise and Yucca plants bring life, textures and earthy tones into the room. They soften the tile surfaces and link to the green radiator and ceiling light. Katie says: “Kind of like the mirror, the plants add softness to the harsh lines and edges of some fixtures and keep the space feeling tropical and tranquil. We also chose plants with bold and bright greens to detract from the harshness of the white walls and add a colourful contrast.” Katie’s toddler helps water them during bath-time, and she rotates them for light.
Layering Personality: Accessories, Art & Playful Details
Katie kept heavy pattern in the bathroom tiles, then added accessories: a smiley bath mat, Hacienda/New Order print and colourful candles. She adds: “Although the yellow is a statement colour, the tiles are the only pattern in the bathroom. This meant we can get away with adding individual pieces that again don’t over complicate with busyness but instead create contrast with bold statements.” Because each piece is individual, the room feels curated, not cluttered.
Facing the Challenges: Renovation, Trades & Timelines
This project needed skill, samples and patience. CDE Ceramic Tiling (@cdeceramictiling on Facebook) handled the technical work, then Katie added colour. For your own makeover, allow time for tile samples, grout choices, paint testing and disruption while the bathroom is out of use.
Bold Bathroom Tiles: Katie’s Advice for Nervous Homeowners
Katie’s favourite feature? “The tiles, 100%. I love the drama.” Her advice: in small bathrooms, limit pattern to one area—floor, shower or splashback. And always create a physical mood board. She says: “Always create a mood board. They are so helpful in bringing an idea from your head to life. Don’t just create one on your phone (if possible), but use real textures, samples, materials to get a physical feel of how things will be in the space.”
Katie’s mood board helped her pull her look together with a more cohesive approach.
