Product story

Where The Wall Meets The Floor

At the foot of a tiled wall, where every mop, boot and vacuum eventually arrives, a 152 x 152mm glazed ceramic skirting closes the junction in the same rich mid-blue: the Artworks Windsor Blue Skirting Tile, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

A skirting tile is a wall tile with a job to do. The face carries the same gloss glaze as the field, and the profile is shaped so that the top edge is finished and the foot sits down onto the floor covering. That does two useful things at once. It gives the tiling a proper base course instead of a raw edge stopped short of the floor, and it puts a glazed, wipeable surface exactly where a painted timber skirting takes its punishment. Pieces are 152mm long, so a linear metre of wall takes 6.6 of them. Boxes, separately, contain 4 pieces and cover 0.6 linear metres as supplied.

Specify it in any room where the floor gets washed rather than hoovered — a shower room, a utility, a cloakroom, a boot room. At ankle height the mid-blue works hard: the gloss shrugs off splashes and mop water, and the depth of the colour is forgiving of the everyday scuffing that this line of a room always collects. Run it continuously along the base of the tiling and stop it into a door architrave; where the base course turns an outside corner, the External Corner Trim takes the angle in glaze.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

To request a return, contact Hyperion within 14 days of delivery. For eligible online consumer cancellations, you have a further 14 days after telling us to send the goods back. Contact us for the correct return address; your statutory cancellation does not depend on our authorisation.

Additional supplier returns have their own eligibility rules, charges and exclusions. These do not override statutory cancellation rights or rights for faulty goods. See our refund policy and supplier return guidance before arranging a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Windsor Blue tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. The glaze is impervious and unaffected by constant water, so these tiles are entirely at home in a shower enclosure, above a bath, behind a sink or across a wet-room wall. What matters is what sits behind and between them: a properly tanked substrate, a white flexible adhesive and a grout rated for wet areas. The tiles themselves never need sealing.

Can I use these on the floor?

No — Artworks is a wall range only. The ceramic body is not rated for foot traffic and the gloss glaze would scratch and lose its shine quickly underfoot. If you want a floor beneath a Windsor Blue wall, a geometric or encaustic-effect floor tile is the natural partner, and our team can help you pair one.

Will the colour be consistent across my order?

The Artworks glazes are applied over a pressed ceramic body, and slight variation from tile to tile is part of the character rather than a fault — it is what keeps a large tiled wall from looking printed. On a gloss mid-blue that variation reads as depth rather than as patchiness. Order the whole of a room in one go where you can, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Windsor Blue?

Use a white flexible adhesive. The grout is a real design decision here rather than a default. Brilliant white is a legitimate choice — it puts the tile squarely in the blue-and-white tradition and makes the wall read crisp and graphic — but it emphasises every joint, so your setting-out has to be accurate and the effect is a grid as much as a colour. If you would rather the blue carried the wall and the joints stayed quiet, use a soft mid-grey a shade or two lighter than the tile. The one to avoid is a warm beige or greige, which muddies a clean mid-blue and does it no favours. Grout haze shows readily on gloss, so sponge each section as you go.

Is Windsor Blue in stock, and how quickly can I have it?

The range is usually held in stock and we can normally despatch within a few working days; mouldings and trims occasionally run on a longer lead time, so it is worth a call on 01344 620211 before you plan the fitting week. UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000, and we can hold a delivery back until your site is ready.

How does Windsor Blue compare with the other blues in the Artworks range?

Windsor Blue is the versatile one. Original Style describe it as a versatile mid-blue, rich and glossy, like looking into deep water — and that is the point of it: it sits in the middle of the family, without the strong cast that makes the others more specific. The alternatives each pull in a direction. One is a warmer blue with a green cast to it. One is a deep indigo for a much more dramatic room. One is a blue-grey that shifts with the light and reads almost as a neutral. If you want a blue that behaves like a blue and works with most schemes, this is usually the answer — but order cut samples of two or three and look at them on the actual wall, because blues change more between rooms than any other family in the range.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Windsor Blue?

Fifteen: the 152mm field tile and its half tile, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Windsor Blue is not made as a large brick or as a bevelled metro tile, so a scheme needing one of those formats will have to take it from a different colour. Original Style also make rectangles, round-edge tiles, internal corners and corner wrapping pieces to order in this colour — those carry minimum quantities and longer lead times, so call us on 01344 620211 if you need one.

How does the skirting tile work?

It is a 152 x 152mm tile with a curved, glazed foot that turns out at the bottom to meet the floor, so there is no open joint at the base of the wall to collect water or dirt. Four to a box covering 0.6 linear metres, or about 6.6 tiles to the metre. Fit it first and set the field tiles above it.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Bed the pieces on white flexible adhesive. Two grout answers are worth your time. White is a proper, traditional decision — it belongs to the blue-and-white idiom and it makes each piece read separately — but it does mean no joint is hidden, so the run must be set out true from the start. A gentle mid-grey, lifted a little from the tile colour, does the reverse and lets the blue take charge of the wall. What to avoid is anything warm: beige and greige both cloud a clean mid-blue. At the floor line use a flexible sealant joint rather than grout, and polish off any haze while the surface is still damp.
  • Layout: Fit the skirting first and tile up from it, so the base course sets the datum for everything above; floors are rarely level and the discrepancy is far easier to absorb at the bottom than to chase up the wall. Cut to length at internal angles and use the External Corner Trim where the run turns outward. Leave a small movement gap where the skirting meets the floor finish.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
