Where the Tiling Meets the Floor

A 152 x 152mm glazed ceramic skirting piece in a warm leaf green: the Artworks Palm Green Skirting Tile, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

Every tiled wall has to land somewhere, and this is the piece that lands it. Shaped rather than flat, with a glazed leading edge that turns the base of the run away from the floor, it replaces a timber skirting altogether and gives a junction that can be mopped instead of dusted. It is sold by the linear metre in practice: 6.6 pieces make up a metre, and a box of four covers 0.6 linear metres. A room with a 4.2 metre tiled perimeter therefore needs 28 pieces, which is seven boxes.

It comes into its own in exactly the rooms this green was made for — a boot room where wet coats drip, a garden room with doors open onto gravel, a utility or a potting area where the floor gets swept rather than treated gently. Running the same leaf green down to floor level rather than stopping it short keeps the colour whole and lets the wall sit against a terracotta or buff quarry floor without a strip of painted timber interrupting the two. Against warm brick or a black-and-white geometric floor the effect is closer to a conservatory than a corridor.

Installation & care

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: A white flexible adhesive is essential, since a grey one will shadow through and dull the glaze at the very point where the light is weakest. Grout to a soft stone, warm off-white or pale green-grey. Brilliant white is the first thing to rule out — it draws a hard bright line along the floor and pushes the green towards the institutional — and a cool or blue-grey grout is the second, because it argues with the warmth in this glaze and leaves the skirting looking tired.
  • Layout: Fix the skirting first and work the field tiling up from it, so the joints stack cleanly and any tolerance is taken out at the top of the wall rather than at the floor. Mitre external returns and butt the internal ones. The pale biscuit shows as a light line on any cut, so keep cuts to the least seen end of a wall, typically behind a door swing.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Artworks Palm Green tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. Artworks is specified for both wet and dry wall areas, so Palm Green is at home in a shower enclosure, a wet room or around a bath. The background must be sound, dry and properly tanked, with a flexible waterproof adhesive and grout throughout the wet zone. Wet, the glaze deepens and the leaf green goes richer and a shade darker, closer to a wet fern than to its dry colour — then dries back lighter again.

Can I use Artworks Palm Green on the floor?

No. Artworks is a wall tile range only. The glaze is not rated for foot traffic and would scratch and dull quickly underfoot, and a gloss surface of this kind is slippery when wet. A warm green wall sits particularly well above a terracotta or buff quarry floor, or a black and white geometric. Call 01344 620211 and we will suggest a floor to go under it.

Will every Palm Green tile be exactly the same shade?

There is slight variation between production batches, and green shows it more than most colours because the eye picks up a small shift towards yellow or towards grey very readily. Order the whole quantity for a room at once, including your wastage allowance, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box. If you need to add to existing tiling later, send us a photograph and we will tell you honestly how close a current batch is likely to be.

What adhesive and grout colour should I use with Palm Green?

Use a white flexible adhesive — a grey adhesive can shadow through the glaze and dull it. For grout, keep it warm and close in tone: a soft stone, a warm off-white or a pale green-grey. Two to avoid. A brilliant white draws a hard grid across the wall and is what tips any green towards looking institutional rather than domestic. And a cool or blue-grey grout fights the warmth in this particular green and leaves it looking gone-over and tired. Warm, quiet, and only a shade or two off the tile.

Is Palm Green in stock, and how quickly can it be delivered?

Palm Green is usually held in stock across the range, field and half tiles and the full set of mouldings alike. We will confirm availability and a delivery date for your exact quantity when you order, and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000. If a piece is temporarily out we will tell you the lead time before you commit rather than after. Call 01344 620211 or visit us at 67 High Street, Ascot.

How does Palm Green compare with the other Artworks colours, and with Jade Breeze?

Artworks offers two soft greens and they are not interchangeable. Palm Green is the warmer of the pair — a leaf green with yellow in it, botanical rather than mineral, and it stays warm under lamplight. Jade Breeze is the cooler one, a sage with a blue-green cast that reads crisper and more Deco. Warm woods, brass and terracotta belong with Palm Green; chrome and black suit Jade Breeze better. They are close enough on a screen to be genuinely hard to tell apart, so order a sample of each and look at them together in your own room before you decide.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Artworks Palm Green?

Fifteen pieces: the 152 x 152mm field tile, the 152 x 76mm half tile, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Palm Green does not include a large brick tile, bevelled metro tiles, relief-moulded decorative tiles, handed corner pieces, an internal corner trim, wrapping pieces or rounded-edge tiles. Everything is sold by the box.

Are there corner pieces for the Palm Green Skirting Tile?

No handed skirting corners are stocked in Palm Green, so both internal and external angles are cut and mitred on site. Set out from the most visible corner of the room and work outwards, so any small cut lands where it will be seen least — typically behind a door or in the corner furthest from the entrance. Allow ten per cent extra for the cuts.
