Where the Tiling Meets the Floor

A 152 x 152mm moulded ceramic skirting piece in soft period pink: the Artworks Duchy Pink Skirting Tile, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

A skirting tile is the base course that turns tiling into proper joinery. This one stands a full 152mm high, with a moulded top edge that throws a shadow line where the skirting meets whatever sits above it, and it beds directly onto the floor finish in place of a timber skirting board. In a bathroom, a scullery or a boot room that is a practical decision as much as an aesthetic one: no painted timber to swell, mark or need repainting, and the whole junction wipes down.

Run it round the room and bring the field tiling down onto it, or use it on its own beneath a painted wall. External corners are mitred on site, and Duchy Pink is unusually forgiving there — both the glaze and the biscuit beneath it are pale, so a cut or mitred edge shows as no more than the faintest light line, where a dark colourway would leave a hard dark seam. Internal corners are simply butted.

⚠ Installation & Care Tips

  • Adhesive & Grout: Fix on white flexible adhesive — grey can shadow through a pale glaze, and it shows most on a piece that sits low and catches raking light. Keep the grout warm and close in tone: soft putty, warm buff or pale sand. A brilliant white joint makes the pink look chalky and washed out, while a cool or mid grey empties the warmth out of it and leaves a dusty, tired line along the floor.
  • Layout: Measure the full perimeter, subtract the door openings, and buy in whole boxes — running short of a moulded piece mid-run is a genuine nuisance. Set the skirting before anything above it and level it carefully, because every course laid afterwards takes its line from this one. Mitre the external corners and butt the internals.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Artworks Duchy Pink tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. Artworks is specified for both wet and dry wall areas, so Duchy Pink is at home in a shower enclosure, a wet room or around a bath. The background must be sound, dry and properly tanked, with a flexible waterproof adhesive and grout throughout the wet zone. A soft pink glaze behaves beautifully in a shower: wet, it deepens by a shade or two and looks closer to a warm shell than to a chalky plaster, then dries back lighter again.

Can I use Artworks Duchy Pink on the floor?

No. Artworks is a wall tile range only. The glaze is not rated for foot traffic and would scratch and dull quickly underfoot, and a gloss surface of this kind is slippery when wet. Duchy Pink looks its best above a floor that grounds it — an encaustic-look geometric, a black and white chequer, or a warm terracotta quarry tile. Our team can suggest a floor to sit beneath it; call 01344 620211.

Will every Duchy Pink tile be exactly the same shade?

There is slight variation between production batches, and a soft pink shows it more readily than a strong colour does — a half shade of difference is easy to see across a pale wall. Order the whole quantity for a room in one go, including your wastage allowance, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box. If you need to add to an existing wall later, send us a photograph and we will tell you honestly how close a current batch is likely to be.

What adhesive and grout colour should I use with Duchy Pink?

Use a white flexible adhesive — a grey adhesive can shadow through a pale glaze and cool the colour. For grout, stay warm: a soft putty, a warm buff or a pale sand tone flatters the pink and lets it stay soft. Two things to avoid. A brilliant white grout makes the pink look chalky and washed out by comparison, and a cool or mid grey grout drains the warmth straight out of it and leaves the wall looking dusty rather than rosy. Warm and close in tone is the rule.

Is Duchy Pink in stock, and how quickly can it be delivered?

Duchy Pink is usually held in stock across the range, field tiles and mouldings alike. We will confirm availability and a delivery date for your exact quantity when you order, and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000. If a moulding you want is temporarily out, we will tell you the lead time before you commit rather than after. Call 01344 620211 or visit us at 67 High Street, Ascot.

How does Duchy Pink compare with the other Artworks colours?

Artworks runs from the whites and creams through the soft neutrals to the strong colours. Duchy Pink sits between the two: it is a proper colour rather than a tint, but a gentle and domestic one. Beside the deeper Artworks colours it reads as light and forgiving, and beside the whites it reads as unmistakably warm. It is the choice for a room you want to feel soft and lived-in rather than formal. Order a sample of two or three shades and hold them against your own light before deciding.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Artworks Duchy Pink?

Eighteen pieces: the 152 x 152mm field tile, the 152 x 76mm half tile, the 228 x 75mm large brick, bevelled metro tiles at 150 x 75mm and 75 x 75mm, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Duchy Pink does not include handed corner pieces, an internal corner trim, wrapping pieces or rounded-edge tiles. Everything is sold by the box.

Are there corner pieces for the Duchy Pink Skirting Tile?

No handed skirting corners are stocked in Duchy Pink, so both internal and external angles are cut and mitred on site. Set out from the most visible corner of the room and work outwards, so that any small cut lands where it will be seen least — typically behind a door or in the corner furthest from the entrance. Allow ten per cent extra for the cuts.
