A Warm Leaf Green, Under Glass

A 152 x 152mm gloss ceramic square in a warm leaf green with real yellow in it: the Artworks Palm Green Field Tile, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

This is the square that carries the scheme. A 7mm glazed ceramic body with straight edges and a flat, unbroken face, it covers wall at roughly 43 tiles to the square metre and arrives 22 tiles to a box covering 0.511m² — just under two boxes for every square metre you are tiling. There is no ornament on it and nothing worked into the edge, which is rather the point: the glaze is the whole event, and a broad expanse is where you actually see the colour do its work.

Palm Green belongs to the Victorian appetite for growing things under glass — the Palm House at Kew, the fern craze of the 1850s, the conservatory bolted onto the back of the house. Use it accordingly: a garden room, a boot room, a potting sink, a kitchen that opens onto the garden. The yellow sitting inside the green is what rescues it after dark, because warm bulbs bring that yellow forward and the tile deepens instead of draining towards grey, which is how a colder green fails. Unlacquered brass, terracotta or buff quarry underfoot and warm mid-toned timber all push it towards foliage rather than anything clinical.

⚠ Installation & Care Tips

  • Adhesive & Grout: Fix with a white flexible adhesive — a grey one can shadow through the glaze and dull it. Grout in a soft stone, a warm off-white or a pale green-grey. Steer away from brilliant white, which hardens the joints into a grid and tips any green towards the institutional, and equally away from a cool or blue-grey grout, which fights the warmth in this leaf green and leaves it looking tired.
  • Layout: Set out from a centre line so cuts fall evenly at each end of the wall and full tiles land at eye level. The biscuit beneath the glaze is pale, so a cut edge reads as a light line — turn cuts towards the least visible side, into a corner or under a wall unit. A warm-metal tap, a patterned or terracotta floor and a moulded border above all keep a large green field domestic rather than dairy-like.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Artworks Palm Green tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. Artworks is specified for both wet and dry wall areas, so Palm Green is at home in a shower enclosure, a wet room or around a bath. The background must be sound, dry and properly tanked, with a flexible waterproof adhesive and grout throughout the wet zone. Wet, the glaze deepens and the leaf green goes richer and a shade darker, closer to a wet fern than to its dry colour — then dries back lighter again.

Can I use Artworks Palm Green on the floor?

No. Artworks is a wall tile range only. The glaze is not rated for foot traffic and would scratch and dull quickly underfoot, and a gloss surface of this kind is slippery when wet. A warm green wall sits particularly well above a terracotta or buff quarry floor, or a black and white geometric. Call 01344 620211 and we will suggest a floor to go under it.

Will every Palm Green tile be exactly the same shade?

There is slight variation between production batches, and green shows it more than most colours because the eye picks up a small shift towards yellow or towards grey very readily. Order the whole quantity for a room at once, including your wastage allowance, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box. If you need to add to existing tiling later, send us a photograph and we will tell you honestly how close a current batch is likely to be.

What adhesive and grout colour should I use with Palm Green?

Use a white flexible adhesive — a grey adhesive can shadow through the glaze and dull it. For grout, keep it warm and close in tone: a soft stone, a warm off-white or a pale green-grey. Two to avoid. A brilliant white draws a hard grid across the wall and is what tips any green towards looking institutional rather than domestic. And a cool or blue-grey grout fights the warmth in this particular green and leaves it looking gone-over and tired. Warm, quiet, and only a shade or two off the tile.

Is Palm Green in stock, and how quickly can it be delivered?

Palm Green is usually held in stock across the range, field and half tiles and the full set of mouldings alike. We will confirm availability and a delivery date for your exact quantity when you order, and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000. If a piece is temporarily out we will tell you the lead time before you commit rather than after. Call 01344 620211 or visit us at 67 High Street, Ascot.

How does Palm Green compare with the other Artworks colours, and with Jade Breeze?

Artworks offers two soft greens and they are not interchangeable. Palm Green is the warmer of the pair — a leaf green with yellow in it, botanical rather than mineral, and it stays warm under lamplight. Jade Breeze is the cooler one, a sage with a blue-green cast that reads crisper and more Deco. Warm woods, brass and terracotta belong with Palm Green; chrome and black suit Jade Breeze better. They are close enough on a screen to be genuinely hard to tell apart, so order a sample of each and look at them together in your own room before you decide.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Which pieces are available in Artworks Palm Green?

Fifteen pieces: the 152 x 152mm field tile, the 152 x 76mm half tile, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner trim, and ten mouldings — Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and Omega. Palm Green does not include a large brick tile, bevelled metro tiles, relief-moulded decorative tiles, handed corner pieces, an internal corner trim, wrapping pieces or rounded-edge tiles. Everything is sold by the box.

How many Palm Green field tiles are in a box?

A box holds 22 field tiles at 152 x 152mm and covers 0.511 square metres, weighing 6.38kg. Reckon on about 43 tiles to the square metre. Measure your wall, add ten per cent for cuts and breakages, then round up to whole boxes — and order any mouldings at the same time so the whole scheme comes from one batch.

Will a green tiled bathroom look clinical?

It can, and it is worth saying plainly. Green tiling with brilliant white grout, chrome fittings and a plain white floor sits very close to the hospital and dairy tiling the Victorians used. Palm Green starts with an advantage here, because the yellow in it reads as foliage rather than as disinfectant. Help it along: keep the grout off pure white, use warm metal and wood — unlacquered brass, oak, walnut — put pattern or terracotta on the floor, and finish the run with a moulded border rather than a bare edge.

How does Palm Green look under artificial light?

Better than most greens, because the yellow already in it is what warm bulbs bring forward. Under tungsten or a low colour-temperature LED it deepens and warms rather than going flat or grey, which is the way a cooler green tends to fail. In daylight it lifts and reads fresher and leafier. It is still worth holding a sample under the actual bulbs you intend to use as well as at the window — green shifts more than any other colour, and a bathroom is mostly seen after dark.
