The Blue That Will Not Decide

A blue that reads grey against an overcast window and blue again by mid-afternoon, glazed onto a 152 x 152mm square: the Artworks Ascot Blue Field Tile, from Hyperion Tiles, your official Original Style stockist.

The field tile is the plain square that makes up the body of a scheme — 7mm thick, straight-edged, with a gloss surface that carries the colour uninterrupted from one side to the other. A 152 x 152mm tile covers 0.023104m², so a square metre of wall takes about 43 of them. Boxes hold 22 tiles and cover 0.511m² as supplied — a fraction under two boxes to the square metre.

Ascot Blue is the one colour in the Artworks range that changes its reading with the light and will not settle on being blue or grey; Original Style describe it as a blueish-grey or a greyish-blue depending on the light it is seen in. Across a full field of plain squares that behaviour has room to show itself — a north-facing wall holds the grey through the morning, and by the time the sun has come round the same wall has turned. It is light enough to take a whole room without closing it in, and it behaves as much like a soft neutral as a colour, which makes a scheme easy to build around it. One coincidence we can claim no credit for: Original Style named the colour, and our showroom happens to stand at 67 High Street, Ascot.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Additional supplier returns have their own eligibility rules, charges and exclusions. These do not override statutory cancellation rights or rights for faulty goods. See our refund policy and supplier return guidance before arranging a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ascot Blue tiles be used in a shower or wet room?

Yes. The glaze is impervious and unaffected by constant water, so these tiles are entirely at home in a shower enclosure, above a bath, behind a sink or across a wet-room wall. What matters is what sits behind and between them: a properly tanked substrate, a white flexible adhesive and a grout rated for wet areas. The tiles themselves never need sealing.

Can I use these on the floor?

No — Artworks is a wall range only. The ceramic body is not rated for foot traffic and the gloss glaze would scratch and lose its shine quickly underfoot. For a floor to sit beneath an Ascot Blue wall, a black and white geometric or an encaustic-effect tile is the natural partner, and our team can help you pair one.

Will the colour be consistent across my order?

The Artworks glazes are applied over a pressed ceramic body, and slight variation from tile to tile is part of the character rather than a fault — it is what stops a large tiled wall looking printed. Ascot Blue shows it a little more than most, because the balance of blue and grey shifts across the surface as well as with the light. Order the whole of a room in one go where you can, and mix tiles from several boxes as you set out rather than working box by box.

What adhesive and grout should I use with Ascot Blue?

Use a white flexible adhesive. Grout is unusually consequential on this colour, because it decides which way the tile reads. Ascot Blue sits between blue and grey, and the joint tips the balance: a cooler, faintly blue-toned grey brings the blue forward, while a warm grey or greige lets the grey side dominate. If you want it to keep both readings and stay ambiguous, match the grout closely in tone and let the wall shift on its own. The one to think hard about is brilliant white — on a colour this quiet it becomes the loudest thing on the wall, and the tile loses what little contrast it has. Grout haze shows readily on gloss, so sponge each section as you go.

Is Ascot Blue in stock, and how quickly can I have it?

The range is usually held in stock and we can normally despatch within a few working days; mouldings and trims occasionally run on a longer lead time, so it is worth a call on 01344 620211 before you plan the fitting week. UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000, and we can hold a delivery back until your site is ready.

How does Ascot Blue compare with the other blues in the Artworks range?

Ascot Blue is the quiet one, and the only one that will not settle on a single reading. Original Style describe it as a blueish-grey or a greyish-blue depending on the light it is seen in — classic and understated. The other three commit: one is a warmer blue with a green cast, one a versatile mid-blue, and one a deep indigo that behaves like a dark colour. If you want a blue that behaves like a soft neutral and changes through the day, this is the one. Order cut samples of two or three and live with them on the wall for a day before choosing.

Can I see a sample before I order?

Yes. Cut samples are free to collect from our Ascot showroom, or we can post one to you for the cost of postage. Seeing the glaze in your own light is the surest way to judge how it will sit against your paint, stone and metalwork.

How much extra should I order for cuts and wastage?

As a guide, add around 10% to your measured area for cuts and breakages, and nearer 15% for a herringbone, diagonal or brick-bond layout. It is also worth keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch in case a repair is ever needed.

Why does Ascot Blue look different at different times of day?

Because that is what the colour is. It sits on the line between blue and grey, so whatever light is in the room decides which side comes forward. Cool north light and an overcast morning pull it towards grey; warm afternoon and evening light, or a warm bulb, bring the blue out. It is the most useful thing to know about this tile, and the reason a single glance at a sample is not enough. Tape a sample to the wall and look at it at the times you actually use the room — first thing, mid-afternoon, and after dark with the lights on. If you want to steer it one way, the grout does most of that work.

How many Ascot Blue field tiles will I need?

A 152 x 152mm tile covers 0.023m², so a square metre of wall takes about 43 of them. Boxes hold 22 and cover 0.511m² as supplied — just under two boxes to the square metre. Measure the tiled area, add around 10% for cuts, then round up to whole boxes, and order any half tiles, trims or mouldings at the same time so everything comes from one batch.

Which pieces are available in Ascot Blue?

Eighteen — the full Artworks set. The 152mm field tile and its half tile, a 228 x 75mm large brick, bevelled metro tiles in 150 x 75mm and 75 x 75mm, a skirting tile, a plain cornice, an external corner, and ten mouldings: Victoria, Egg & Dart, Dentil, Hogarth, Albert, Rope, Astragal, Scroll, Sigma and the Omega dado. Original Style also make rectangles, round-edge tiles, internal corners and corner wrapping pieces to order in this colour — those carry minimum quantities and longer lead times, so call us on 01344 620211 if a scheme needs one.

What colours and materials work with Ascot Blue?

It is one of the easiest colours in the range to build a scheme around, because it behaves as much like a soft neutral as a colour. Pewter, zinc, brushed nickel and unpolished chrome are natural partners — cool metals that share its quality of not quite committing. It also takes brass perfectly well if you want to warm it. Beyond metals: white and off-white paintwork, pale oak, painted joinery in a soft grey or green, limestone, and white sanitaryware. For an accent, a deep rose, a soft terracotta or a muted mustard all lift it without shouting.

What does the external corner do, and do I need one?

It is a 152 x 30mm piece with a rounded, fully glazed face that wraps an outside corner, so instead of two cut tile edges meeting at an arris you get one continuous curve of glaze. A cut tile shows the pale unglazed body along the cut, and on a soft colour that pale line is more noticeable than you might expect, because there is little contrast elsewhere to distract from it. The rounded face also catches the light differently along its curve, which suits this colour. Four to a box covering 0.6 linear metres. If your scheme has an outside corner — a chimney breast, a boxed pipe, a window reveal — this is the piece that finishes it properly.

Installation & Care Tips

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: White flexible adhesive throughout. Then the grout decides which way the wall reads: matched closely in tone it leaves the glaze free to swing between its blue and its grey; a cooler grey with a trace of blue in it holds the blue side forward; a warm grey or greige settles the wall on grey. Avoid brilliant white — against a colour this quiet it becomes the loudest thing on the wall. Wipe the haze off while it is still damp, because once it dries on a gloss face it takes far more work to shift.
  • Layout: Set out from a full tile on the principal sightline and push the cuts to the ends and behind fittings. Where the tiling turns an outside angle, the range's External Corner at 152 x 30mm finishes it in glaze rather than in a cut edge. Check the wall is flat before you begin; a gloss face shows any waviness once light rakes along it.
  • Cleaning: The gloss glaze is non-porous and needs no sealing. Wipe with warm water and a mild detergent; avoid abrasive pads and acidic limescale removers, which will dull the surface over time.
