Description
Fontenay Porcelain Pleated 7.5 x 20 Wall Tiles
Discover Fontenay Porcelain Pleated tiles, the ultimate expression of timeless elegance in classic subway tile format. Available in both traditional smooth and contemporary pleated finishes, these versatile off-white tiles offer endless design possibilities. Transform your kitchen, bathroom, or living spaces with the enduring appeal of authentic metro tiles, reimagined for modern living.
Why Choose Fontenay Porcelain Pleated Wall Tiles?
These expertly crafted 7.5 x 20cm porcelain tiles honour the heritage of classic metro tiles while delivering superior performance for contemporary homes. The carefully calibrated off-white tone—warmer than stark white yet lighter than cream—provides the perfect neutral backdrop that never dates, working harmoniously with any colour palette or design scheme.
Choose between two distinct finishes: the classic smooth surface that captures the authentic charm of traditional Victorian underground tiles, or the innovative pleated design that adds subtle dimensional interest and catches light beautifully throughout the day. Both options feature precisely bevelled edges that create gentle shadow lines, adding depth and definition to your tiled surfaces.
Crafted from premium porcelain, these tiles offer exceptional durability, zero water absorption, and resistance to stains and scratches—surpassing traditional ceramic alternatives while maintaining the authentic look of classic metro tiles. The consistent colour throughout the tile body ensures chips and wear remain virtually invisible over decades of use.
Perfect For These Spaces
Kitchen Splashbacks & Feature Walls
Create the quintessential kitchen splashback that protects your walls while elevating your entire cooking space. The off-white tone brightens the room without showing every splash or fingerprint, while the classic format works beautifully with both traditional Shaker kitchens and ultra-modern handleless designs. The pleated option adds sophisticated texture behind open shelving or glass cabinets.
Bathroom Walls & Shower Enclosures
Transform your bathroom into a serene sanctuary with floor-to-ceiling metro tiling. The porcelain construction ensures complete water resistance, making these tiles perfect for shower enclosures, wet rooms, and areas around bathtubs. The off-white tone creates a spa-like atmosphere while maximising light reflection in smaller bathrooms.
Utility Rooms & Laundries
Bring style to hardworking spaces with easy-clean metro tiles that handle daily splashes and spills effortlessly. The durable porcelain surface resists household chemicals and cleaning products, while the classic design elevates these often-overlooked areas beyond purely functional spaces.
Cloakrooms & Powder Rooms
Make a sophisticated statement in compact spaces where every design choice counts. The traditional metro format creates visual interest without overwhelming small rooms, while the off-white colour keeps the space feeling fresh and inviting. Perfect for creating Instagram-worthy guest bathrooms.
Commercial Spaces
Ideal for cafés, restaurants, boutique retail spaces, and hotel bathrooms seeking that coveted artisanal aesthetic. The commercial-grade durability handles high traffic while maintaining the charm of traditional tiling. The pleated option offers a contemporary twist on the classic café wall.

Installation & Care
Installation Requirements
- Suitable for interior wall applications only—not recommended for floors
- Ensure walls are clean, dry, flat, and properly prepared before installation
- Use high-quality porcelain tile adhesive for secure bonding
- Maintain consistent 2-3mm grout joints for professional results
- Consider using tile spacers and levelling clips for perfect alignment
- Both smooth and pleated options install using standard tiling techniques
- Can be cut with standard tile cutters or wet saws
Pattern Planning Start with a centred tile or centred grout line depending on wall width. For brick bond pattern, ensure 50% offset between rows. Plan cuts carefully around windows, outlets, and fixtures. Consider ordering tiles from the same batch for consistent colour.
Easy Maintenance
Porcelain metro tiles are remarkably low-maintenance. Daily cleaning requires just a damp microfibre cloth. For deeper cleaning, use pH-neutral tile cleaners. The non-porous surface resists staining, making these tiles perfect for high-use areas. Pleated tiles may require occasional brushing along the ridges to prevent dust accumulation. Re-seal grout annually to maintain water resistance and appearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many tiles do I need per square metre?
You'll need approximately 67 tiles per square metre for standard brick bond pattern, accounting for 3mm grout joints. For other patterns like herringbone, add 15% extra. We recommend ordering 10% additional for standard installations to cover cuts, breakages, and future repairs.
Can I mix smooth and pleated tiles?
Absolutely! Many customers create stunning feature strips or zones by combining both finishes. Use pleated tiles as a decorative border, create horizontal bands, or designate entire walls for textural contrast. Both finishes share identical dimensions and colour for seamless integration.
What's the best grout colour for off-white tiles?
This depends on your desired look. White grout creates a seamless appearance perfect for small spaces. Grey grout (light or dark) adds definition and hides everyday dirt better. For dramatic impact, black grout creates a striking grid pattern. Request our grout colour chart to see all options.
Are these tiles suitable for shower walls?
Yes! The porcelain construction makes them completely waterproof and ideal for shower enclosures. Ensure proper waterproof backing and use epoxy or waterproof grout in shower areas. The smooth finish is easier to clean in showers, though pleated tiles can be used for accent walls outside direct water zones.
How do I clean grout lines?
Regular cleaning prevents grout discolouration. Use a soft brush with bicarbonate of soda paste for routine cleaning. For tougher stains, apply specialised grout cleaner following manufacturer instructions. Avoid harsh acids or bleach that can damage grout. Annual resealing keeps grout looking fresh.
Can these be installed over existing tiles?
While possible with proper preparation and adhesive, we recommend removing old tiles for best results. If tiling over existing tiles, ensure they're firmly attached, thoroughly clean, and use appropriate primer and adhesive designed for tile-on-tile application.
