Description

The Crowning Glory: Fired Earth Edwardian Caledonian Dado

Finish your heritage wall with the authentic detail of the Fired Earth Edwardian Caledonian Dado Tile—a structurally moulded border tile designed to cap off your tiling with Edwardian grandeur.

Part of the celebrated Edwardian Collection, this rail tile is inspired by the iconic London Underground stations designed by Leslie Green in the early 1900s. The Caledonian Dado features a traditional moulded profile and is finished in a deep, glossy bottle green. It is the essential finishing touch for any period-style room, designed to sit on top of the Acanthus Caledonian wall tiles or plain field tiles to create a defined waist-height border.

✓ The Hyperion Family Promise

  • Official Fired Earth Stockist - We are a trusted partner of Fired Earth. Purchase genuine architectural ceramics with confidence from our family-run business.
  • Perfect Proportions - At 22.8cm wide, this dado matches the width of the Acanthus and Base tiles perfectly, allowing for flawless vertical grout alignment.
  • Authentic Glaze - Features the same deep, glossy finish as the original 1903 station tiles, complete with characteristic crackle (crazing).
  • Architectural Definition - The moulded profile creates a neat, professional stop to your tiling, protecting the top edge and adding visual weight.

🏛️ The Edwardian Hallway

Create a durable and stylish hallway. Use the Dado to cap a half-height tiled wall (wainscoting), protecting the plaster above and separating the gloss tiles from wallpaper or paint. Shop wall tiles.

🚿 Bathroom Borders

Add structure to your bathroom design. Run a line of Caledonian Dado tiles around the room to break up floor-to-ceiling tiling or to frame a specific zone like a basin splashback. View bathroom tiles.

🔥 Fireplace Surrounds

Frame your hearth with authentic detail. These border tiles are suitable for use 30cm away from heat sources, providing a neat, decorative edge to a tiled fireplace surround. Browse hearth tiles.

⚠️ Installation & Care Tips

  • Crazing: Like the original tiles from 1903, this glaze is designed to "craze" (develop fine hairline cracks) over time. This is a deliberate feature that adds to the authentic antique character.
  • Sealing: You must seal these tiles with a high-quality impregnator before grouting. This prevents the grout colour from bleeding into the fine cracks of the glaze.
  • Installation: This is a dado (border) tile. It is typically installed at the top of a tiled section (wainscoting) or between two different tile designs to create a horizontal break.
  • Cleaning: Use a pH-neutral cleaner and a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive pads, as they can scratch the high-gloss surface.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What is a "Dado" tile?

This tile functions as a border or chair rail. It has a specific moulded profile that caps off the top of a tiled wall, providing a neat, finished edge so you don't have a raw tile edge meeting your paint or wallpaper.

What grout should I use?

For a crisp, period-correct look, we recommend Mapei Ultracolour Plus 100 White or 103 Moon White. This highlights the shape of the tiles.

For a subtler finish, you might prefer a darker grey like Mapei Ultracolour Plus 114 Anthracite.

Does this match the Acanthus tile?

Yes. The Edwardian Caledonian Dado is the exact same bottle green colour and width (22.8cm) as the Edwardian Acanthus Caledonian tile, ensuring the grout lines line up perfectly vertically.

Do I really need to seal a ceramic tile?

In this specific case, yes. The traditional glaze used on the Edwardian range is designed to crackle (craze). Sealing protects these fine cracks from absorbing dirt and grout pigment.

Can I use this in a shower?

Yes, it is excellent for finishing a half-tiled shower wall. Ensure it is sealed properly to prevent water ingress.
