Iconic London History: Fired Earth Edwardian Acanthus Caledonian

Bring a piece of architectural history into your home with Fired Earth Edwardian Acanthus Caledonian Tile—a stunning relief tile that authentically recreates the Art Nouveau style of London’s Edwardian era.

Part of the celebrated Edwardian Collection, this tile is inspired by the work of architect Leslie Green, who designed over 50 London Underground stations between 1903 and 1908. Recreated using moulds taken from original restoration projects, the Acanthus design features a raised, scrolling leaf pattern that adds incredible depth and character to walls. The Caledonian colourway is a rich, glossy bottle green—a signature shade of the era—that pools beautifully in the relief of the tile, highlighting the intricate design.

⚠️ Installation & Care Tips

  • Crazing: This tile features a traditional glaze which is prone to variable crazing (fine crackling) over time. This is an intentional characteristic of heritage-style tiles and adds to their antique charm.
  • Sealing: Because of the potential for crazing, we strongly recommend sealing these tiles with a high-quality impregnator before grouting to prevent grout pigment from staining the fine cracks.
  • Heat Sources: Suitable for use in hearths and fireplaces, provided they are installed a minimum of 30cm away from the direct heat source.
  • Cleaning: Clean with a soft cloth and warm water. Avoid abrasive scourers or harsh acidic cleaners which could damage the gloss glaze.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What grout colour should I use?

For the classic London Underground look, we recommend Mapei Ultracolour Plus 100 White or 103 Moon White. This crisp contrast highlights the deep green shape and the relief pattern of the Acanthus leaf.

For a subtler, moodier finish, you could use a dark grey like Mapei Ultracolour Plus 114 Anthracite, which allows the green to dominate without a stark grid pattern.

Does this tile crackle?

Yes. The glaze is designed to "craze" (develop fine hairline cracks) over time. This is a hallmark of authentic Edwardian ceramics. To protect the look, you must seal the tiles before grouting.

Do I need special trims?

To achieve the full period look, we recommend using the Edwardian Caledonian Base (skirting) and Edwardian Caledonian Dado (border) tiles. These perfectly match the bottle green colour and width of the Acanthus tiles.

Can I use this in a shower?

Yes, these tiles are suitable for shower walls. However, because of the crazing, it is essential that they are sealed thoroughly and maintained correctly to prevent water ingress into the biscuit of the tile.

Is it green or black?

The "Caledonian" colourway is a very deep, rich bottle green. In low light, it can appear quite dark, but in natural light, the green tones glow beautifully, especially where the glaze pools in the pattern.
