Timeworn Elegance: Cathedral Antique 20 x 40cm

An aged natural limestone in a versatile 20 x 40cm brick format — Cathedral Antique from Hyperion Tiles, your official Fired Earth stockist.

Cathedral Antique captures the soft, walked-in beauty of an old ecclesiastical floor — mellow neutral tones, tumbled edges and gentle surface pitting that tell of centuries of wear. The 20 x 40cm rectangle lends itself beautifully to brick-bond and herringbone layouts.

Quarried from solid limestone, it is a porous natural stone that must be sealed. Correctly protected, it performs across internal and external floors and walls and wears ever more gracefully with time.

Installation & care

Installation & care

  • Sealing (essential): This is porous natural limestone. Seal with a quality impregnating stone sealer before grouting and again after laying, and reseal periodically to guard against staining.
  • Adhesive & Grout: Fix with a flexible white or natural stone adhesive and a soft, tonal grout. Avoid acidic or strongly cementitious grouts, which can mark limestone.
  • Cleaning: Sweep and mop with a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Never use vinegar, bleach or abrasive products, which will etch and dull the stone.

Tone, glaze and veining all read differently in your own light. Cut samples are free — sample postage is £4.99 (£8 for Original Style) and we refund it on tile orders over £50 with the code we email you. Our family-run team is happy to check quantities and finishes with you on 01344 620211.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Returns

Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Fired Earth ranges are returned through Fired Earth’s own returns process, and special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What patterns can I lay with the 20x40cm tile?

This rectangular format is incredibly versatile. It is commonly laid in a brick-bond (staggered) pattern for a traditional look, or in a herringbone pattern to add visual texture and grandeur to a room.

Is this tile suitable for outdoors?

Yes. Fired Earth Cathedral Antique is frost resistant and durable, making it perfect for external patios, pathways, and swimming pool surrounds. It creates a beautiful seamless flow when used both indoors and outdoors.

Why does the surface have holes in it?

This is a deliberate feature of the "Antique" finish. The tumbling process highlights the natural pits and voids in the limestone to replicate the wear and tear of centuries-old stone floors.

Is it suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes, absolutely. At 1.5cm thick, this limestone acts as a substantial thermal mass, holding heat efficiently and radiating it into the room.

Is it hard to keep clean?

Once sealed, it is relatively easy to maintain. The textured, pitted surface actually hides dirt and footprints very well. Regular sweeping and mopping with a pH-neutral stone cleaner (like Lithofin Wash & Clean) is all that is required.
