Product story

A Timeless Neutral: Abbey Iron Plain Ceramic Tile

A soft, matt mid-grey ceramic square that anchors the whole Abbey story — Abbey Iron from Hyperion Tiles, your official Fired Earth stockist.

Iron is the quiet workhorse of the Abbey collection: a plain, gently characterful grey designed to frame and balance the range's ornate patterns. Lay it as a calm field around a Waverley or Fountains centrepiece, run it as a simple chequerboard with Abbey Ivory, or use it alone for an understated period floor with real depth of tone.

Each 19.9 x 19.9cm tile is pressed in durable glazed ceramic with the same subtle, deliberate imperfections found across the range, echoing the handmade encaustic cement floors that inspired it. At 10mm thick it is a hardwearing choice for kitchens, hallways and bathrooms, happily paired with underfloor heating and needing no sealing.

Installation & care

Installation & care

  • Adhesive & Grout: Fix with a high-quality flexible tile adhesive and finish with a soft, tonal grout to let the pattern take centre stage.
  • Layout Options: A 3mm grout joint is recommended; shuffle tiles from several boxes as you lay to make the most of the deliberate, characterful variation across the surface.
  • Sealing & Cleaning: Unlike traditional cement encaustics, this glazed ceramic needs no sealing. Simply mop with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner; avoid harsh or abrasive chemicals.
Samples

Tone, glaze and veining can read differently in your own light. Cut samples are free; sample postage is £4.99 (£8 for Original Style) and is refunded on tile orders over £50 using the code emailed with your sample order. Use the sample option in the buying panel, or call our Ascot team on 01344 620211 for help comparing colour, finish and quantities.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Returns

Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Fired Earth ranges are returned through Fired Earth’s own returns process, and special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

How does the metallic "Iron" finish look in person?

The Abbey Iron features a rich, dark slate-grey base with a subtle metallic patina. Because it mimics oxidised metal, it has a slight shimmer that reacts to light, showing faint rusted or copper-toned highlights. It offers a bold, industrial aesthetic without the coldness or maintenance of real steel.

Is this tile suitable for high-traffic areas like hallways or kitchens?

Yes. Since it is made of high-density porcelain, Abbey Iron is incredibly durable and resistant to scratches and heavy foot traffic. The dark, multi-tonal finish is also excellent at disguising occasional dust or paw prints between cleans.

Does this tile require any special sealing?

No. Unlike real iron or natural stone, these porcelain tiles are factory-finished to be non-absorbent. They do not require any sealing before or after installation, and they are highly resistant to staining.

What grout colour should I use with Abbey Iron?

To achieve a seamless, industrial look, we recommend a dark grey or "Anthracite" grout. This blends with the iron tones of the tile and makes the grout lines disappear, emphasizing the metallic surface.

Will the metallic effect wear off over time?

No. The oxidised effect is part of the high-definition glaze that is fired into the ceramic at extremely high temperatures. It is designed to be permanent and will not fade, even in areas exposed to direct sunlight or heavy use.
