Abbey

Abbey Patterned Ceramic Tiles

Inspired by the beautifully decorated floors of the Victorian era and the ecclesiastical buildings that made them famous, the Abbey range from Fired Earth brings timeless period character to contemporary homes. Each 19.9 x 19.9cm tile is crafted in durable glazed ceramic, its undecorated areas carrying subtle, deliberate imperfections that emulate the rustic charm of the handmade encaustic cement tiles that inspired the collection — with none of the sealing or upkeep those cement floors demand.

The range is designed to be mixed and matched. Ornate Fountains, Waverley, Whitby and Wrightington patterns can be laid as sweeping all-over floors or framed as rug-effect centrepieces, grounded by the plain Iron and Ivory tiles and finished with the dedicated Waverley border and corner trims. The result is a bespoke, characterful scheme for hallways, kitchens, bathrooms and shower walls, happily paired with underfloor heating.

As your official Fired Earth stockist, Hyperion Tiles offers free cut samples to collect from our family-run Ascot showroom or posted to your door for a small postage charge, with free UK delivery on orders over £1,000. Visit us at 67 High Street, Ascot, or call our team on 01344 620211 for expert advice on layout and installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles?

Both are fired clay tiles, but porcelain is made from a denser, more refined clay fired at a higher temperature, making it harder, less porous and highly suited to floors and wet areas. Ceramic is a little softer and more porous, which makes it lighter, easy to cut and ideal for walls — though many floor-rated ceramics are also available. Each product page confirms where a tile can be used.

Are ceramic tiles suitable for floors?

Many are, but it depends on the individual tile. Wall ceramics have a softer glaze not intended for underfoot wear, while floor-rated ceramics and porcelains are made to take the traffic. The product page shows each tile's suitability and, where relevant, its slip rating — our team is always happy to recommend the right tile for a floor.

Do ceramic tiles need sealing?

The glazed surface of a ceramic tile is non-porous and effectively self-protecting, so it doesn't need sealing and wipes clean easily. The exceptions are crackle-glazed and any unglazed or natural-finish tiles, which should be sealed. Grout lines can always benefit from a grout protector, and we'll flag any tile that needs extra care.

Will the colour vary between ceramic tiles?

A degree of variation is normal and, with handmade and artisan glazes, very much part of the appeal. We recommend ordering from a single batch where possible and mixing tiles from several boxes as you fix, so any natural variation in tone is spread evenly across the wall or floor rather than appearing in patches.

How many ceramic tiles should I order?

Measure your area in square metres, add around 10% for cuts and breakages (a little more for diagonal or patterned layouts), and round up to whole boxes. It's worth keeping a few spare tiles for any future repairs, since glazes can vary between production runs. Our team can help you check quantities before you order.

Can I order a ceramic tile sample before I commit?

Yes — glaze, colour and finish are best judged in your own light. We offer free cut samples to collect from our Ascot showroom, or posted for a small postage charge, and you're very welcome to visit the showroom to see the full ceramic range in person.

The Abbey collection brings characterful decorative pattern to glazed ceramic tiles. With designs such as Waverley and Whitby, Abbey is perfect for creating a charming, characterful feature on a splashback, feature wall or floor.

Decorative Pattern

Abbey's patterned ceramic tiles bring personality and a sense of heritage craft to a room, ideal for a feature panel, splashback or a fully patterned wall. Their glazed finish catches the light and keeps the designs looking crisp and fresh.

Choosing and Using Patterned Tiles

As glazed ceramic, Abbey wipes clean easily and needs no sealing. Suitability is confirmed on each product page, and patterned tiles reward careful setting-out for a balanced finish; our team can help you plan your layout.
