A Masterpiece of History: Vieux Bourgogne Limestone Ancient Finish

Capture the prestigious, time-worn soul of a historic French estate with the Vieux Bourgogne Limestone Ancient Finish by Ca' Pietra.

A definitive highlight of our Natural Stone Collection, this limestone is the closest possible match to genuine reclaimed flagstones. The Ancient Finish is achieved through a meticulous hand-finishing process, resulting in heavy "pillowed" edges and a deeply textured surface that carries the weight of history. The palette is an organic blend of beige, cream, and atmospheric grey, offering a V3 high variation that creates an evocative, non-uniform floor full of character.

Supplied in 500mm widths with random lengths and a substantial 20mm thickness, these flagstones allow for an authentic, traditional installation. Whether you are transforming a heritage renovation or adding architectural depth to a new build, the Vieux Bourgogne Ancient collection provides a floor that feels as though it has been part of the building for generations.

Installation & care

Installation & care

  • Sealing: This natural stone must be protected. We recommend an impregnating sealer like LTP Mattstone to guard against stains while maintaining the natural Ancient finish.
  • Grout: For a historically accurate look, use a wide grout joint (approx. 6-10mm) and a traditional Limestone or Ivory grout colour to complement the pillowed edges.
  • Dry-Laying: Due to the V3 variation, always dry-lay stones from multiple crates before fixing to ensure a balanced spread of beige and grey tones.
  • Maintenance: Clean only with pH-neutral stone soaps. Avoid acidic supermarket cleaners which can damage the limestone and strip the sealer.
Delivery And Returns

Try it before you commit

Tone, glaze and veining all read differently in your own light. Cut samples are free — sample postage is £4.99 (£8 for Original Style) and we refund it on tile orders over £50 with the code we email you. Our family-run team is happy to check quantities and finishes with you on 01344 620211.

Delivery

In-stock orders are dispatched within 3–5 working days, with express options available. Special-order and made-to-order ranges carry their own lead time, shown on the product page and confirmed when you order. Pallet, slab, large-format and bathware orders travel on a specialist off-load service — we confirm the timescale and book a date that suits you before dispatch.

Delivery is calculated at checkout from your order and postcode (we do not offer showroom collection) and UK delivery is free on orders over £1,000 on most ranges. For pallet deliveries please tell us about access issues in advance — low trees or bridges, narrow roads or gateways, gravel drives, or no turning or unloading space — as a re-delivery charge may apply if we cannot complete delivery.

When your order arrives

Please check your delivery as soon as it arrives. Once goods are unloaded they become the responsibility of the receiver, so if anything isn’t right, contact us within three working days and we’ll put it right quickly.

Returns

Unused, complete orders can be returned within 14 days of delivery; as tiles are picked and packed to your quantity, a restocking fee of 20–30% applies depending on the range. Fired Earth ranges are returned through Fired Earth’s own returns process, and special-order items are non-returnable unless damaged on delivery or faulty. Ordering a free sample first is the simplest way to avoid a return.

Product Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Ancient Finish different from the Weathered version?

The Ancient Finish is significantly more textured and "lived-in." While the Weathered finish offers a gentler aging, the Ancient style features heavily rounded, "pillowed" edges and a surface that feels deeply undulating. This intensive hand-finishing process ensures that no two stones look exactly alike, providing a truly authentic reclaimed appearance.

Is natural limestone easy to maintain in a kitchen?

Yes, provided it is correctly sealed. Because the Ancient Finish is already "pre-aged," it is incredibly forgiving in high-traffic areas like kitchens. Minor scratches or wear simply blend into the existing character of the stone. Regular cleaning with a pH-neutral stone soap will keep the surface protected and looking its best for decades.

How does this stone perform with underfloor heating?

Natural limestone is an exceptional thermal conductor. At 20mm thickness, these slabs act as a high-quality thermal mass, absorbing heat from your underfloor system and releasing it slowly and evenly. This makes it one of the most efficient and comfortable flooring choices for large open-plan living spaces.
